For those who want to experience the thrill of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro without wishing to summit, book a hike on the spectacular Shira Plateau. This plateau stretches out over 13 kilometers to the west of Kibo, up to an elevation of 3962 meters. Placed on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, the Shira Plateau shows the remains of an ancient caldera, a volcanic crater that expired around half a million years ago. Today, it stands as a World Heritage Site, boasting deep valleys and weather-beaten lava flows. These are wonderfully framed near the Kibo Massif, which resembles twisted, modern sculptures.

Make sure you have an early (and good!) breakfast because we leave market town Moshi at 8:00 am sharp for the hour’s drive to Arusha National Park. Once you arrive, you’ll stretch your legs on an out-of-this-world walking safari, accompanied by a ranger who will guide you through rainforest up to a sparkling waterfall where you’ll be able to spot black and white colobus monkeys going about their day. After a tasty lunch you’ll hop in the Land Cruiser for a game drive that will take you through a wider scope of the park, including the Lakes of Momella and the Ngurduto Crater, and you’ll most likely spot buffalo, waterbuck, giraffe, warthogs, zebra and gazelle as well as a host of different bird species. Not too long ago, there were only two main routes used to climb Kilimanjaro – the Marangu (Coca Cola) route and the Machame (Whiskey) route. But as Tanzania’s tourism industry flourished, the Kilimanjaro park authority created more trails to African’s highest peak. Lemosho, a relatively new route, is preferred by reputable operators due to its beauty, remoteness, and success rate. In short, it maximizes the chances that a climber will reach the summit, and enjoy the experience overall. The Lemosho route can be done in as little as six days (five nights) on the mountain.

The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accomodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents.The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain.

Approaching Kilimanjaro from the south-west, we take the popular Machame Route, with a total trip time of seven days, this is giving us even more acclimatization time and an even better chance of reaching the summit. Lush rainforest and Alpine moorland characterize the Machame Route, a trek which is challenging, make no mistake, despite the extra time given to acclimatize. The 6-day Marangu Route records a low summit success rate of about 50%! Since climbers tend to rush to reach the summit. Skipping one extra acclimatization day can significantly lower the average success rate of 50%. The Coca-Cola Route, which is the only route that uses huts instead of tents as a type of housing, is also known as the Marangu Route.
