Curling around the western brim of the Camargue, the Mediterranean port of Le Grau-du-Roi is a water-locked paradise where sun-soaked sands and lush wetlands meet head-on. Sandy beaches stretch along the western shore, where the Port Camargue marina is circled by palm-lined promenades and waterfront restaurants. To the east, the pink-tinted salt lagoons and lush marshes of the Camargue Regional Park are a breeding ground for the region’s ubiquitous white horses, black bulls, and flamingos—and visiting is one of the top things to do in Le Grau-du-Roi.
The weather is generally pleasant in May, but even if the sun doesn’t shine, the arrival of an enormous Romani pilgrimage in the neighboring town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer injects plenty of color. Le Grau-du-Roi is tiny and easy to explore by foot. As it’s one of the largest leisure ports in Europe, the best way to get around is by water. The little town faces east, so sunset views from an evening cruise are worth planning for. For those wanting to spot the famous Camargue horses, bulls or flamingos, booking a safari by 4WD is advisable—driving a rental car on the salt flats is a recipe for disaster.
Restaurant and bar Bamboo Beach is Le Grau-du-Roi’s ultimate hangout. With loungers for rent, paddle boards for hire, and Balinese four-poster beds available, the spot encourages lingering. Luckily, the selection of cocktails, fresh salads and seafood—and a decadent ice cream sundae menu—will keep you satiated all day. Evenings are lively.
