A fun thing to do
It is not your typical mine experience … nonetheless it was a very interesting excursion… it was informative and fun to dig for amethysts. Utsi is an excellent guide .. prompt, friendly, and very knowledgeable… he showed us a lot of things along the way and explained a lot about life in the Lapland.

Biking in the forest
Super guide: friendly and competent. Excellent bikes adapted to powder snow. Fabulos view at the top of the hill. Digging for stones was too long

Impressive landscape, nice mine, little time to enjoy nature
Amazing landscape, the mine was worth a visit. We just wish that we had more time to walk a bit in the nature or at least enjoy it without rush (e.g. 10-15min per change of vehicle and on the summit), just like the break at the middle station which was very nice! The time in the mine digging was 30min and we thought it was well chosen as it's quite chilly there. We found some small pieces of Amethyst and were allowed to keep a few. We'd recommend this tour to anyone who just wants to go to the mine while having a good look out the window - if you'd like to experience the surrounding nature more, there are definitely other tours which focus more on it.

Lampivaara Amethyst Mine
  • A day trip to the mine with a stop for an open-air lunch is a particularly fun excursion for kids.
  • The Pyhä-Luosto National Park is one of the most scenic in Lapland and photographers will want to capture the rolling landscape.
  • The mine entrance cannot be reached by car; a “snow train” called the Amethyst Pendolino transports visitors to the mine from the town of Luosto or Lampivaara Café, outside Luosto.
  • Temperatures inside the mine are cool even in summer, so bring a light jacket; during the winter, opt for your warmest clothing and shoes.
  • There’s limited access for visitors with restricted mobility.
