There’s no cost to enter the walls of Jaisalmer Fort, as the area contains a town with residences, shops, hotels, and businesses. You can wander around for free. However, each ticketed attraction within the fort—including the Fort Palace Museum, the Patwon Ki Haveli, and several Jain temples—has its own fee.

The views from Jaisalmer Fort across the Thar Desert—and of the fort's yellow sandstone buildings—are beautiful at sunset. Time your visit for mid-to-late afternoon so you can hang around at a rooftop restaurant or lookout point after touring the fort's attractions. The desert city of Jaisalmer can get extremely hot; avoid visiting mid-day.

Jaisalmer Fort itself doesn’t have hours as it’s essentially a town within fort walls. However, the fort's businesses and attractions operate their own opening hours. The havelis and Fort Palace Museum are typically open during normal business hours. The Jain temples are typically open from early morning until mid-evening, with a midday closure for prayers.

Plan about half a day, or 3–4 hours, to explore Jaisalmer Fort. As well as visiting the attractions within the fort walls—such as the Fort Palace Museum, havelis, and temples—allow time to browse the shops and market stalls, and stop for a snack or drink at a restaurant or street food stall.

There are lots of places to visit within Jaisalmer Fort. Don’t miss the Fort Palace Museum, Dussehra Chowk public square, Maharaja Mahal, Canon Point Viewpoint for sweeping views over the fort and city beyond, seven Jain temples, the Shri Laxminathji Temple, Manak Chowk market, and textile shops and galleries.
