Overview

Embark on a journey through the Joani Forest in the southern part of Zanzibar Island with this tour that takes just a few hours. Seif was a wonderful guide. I asked to see red colombus monkeys and he showed me so many. He has great eyes and could spot them much better than I could. He also made sure I got lots of pictures, many of them with the monkeys. He also knows about many other tours and we went to a spice farm. I saw so many spices growing that I lost track. Then he drove out of the way to take me back to my hotel. You will have a great time with Seif.

The guide, Seif, was friendly and professional guy. He walked me through the traditional Zanzibari relationship with the rainforest, which was very interesting. He knows where the Red Colobus Monkeys are, it’s guaranteed!

Excellent tour. We saw the monkeys up close right away while they were relocating for their afternoon nap. Then we went on a walk through the forest and mangroves. My guide was very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna.

Monkeys and Mangroves

The driver was 20 minutes late which was very worrying and meant that, rather than being amongst the first to arrive at the forest, we were beaten there by a large number of tour buses. The tour itself lived up to expectations, with plenty of monkeys despite the torrential rain.

Hiking through the forest

The tour starts with a van ride for about an hour to the forest. Upon arrival, there were lots of blue monkeys to view (and steal any food if you happened to be eating). Then we headed off for a forest trek to find the red Columbus monkeys. After about an hour, we found a troop. We didn't have time to look for mongoose. There were two small kiosks where you could by bracelets, sarapes, wood plaques and fruit (dragon, oranges, papayas). The only problem we had was the heat (certainly not under the control of tge tour operators!). The van was older and had some AC, but not cool enough.

Very disappointing tour with a terrible guide

This tour was very underwhelming. We met the guide Seif at the meeting point but he wasn't able to go on the tour with us so we were left alone with the driver. He seemed nice though. When we got the forrest our driver disappeared and we were left alone at the reception without any instructions until a local guide from national park told us we were joining his tour. The guide was okay but he didn't seem interested in doing the tour. He spoke as if he was reading aloud from a manuscript and a lot of the time he was talking on his phone and we just walked behind with the other people on the tour not knowing what was going on. Before we got to see the monkeys we had been told to keep a distance to them, but when we arrived at the site with the monkeys there were so many tourist standing SO close to the monkeys that we could hardly see them if we did not break the distance rules. None of the park staff told the tourist to keep a distance and the monkeys seem used to being around people. It felt more like being in a zoo than in a national park. After seeing the monkeys we had to drive to the mangrove and because some of the other guest on the tour had arrived on a scooter the guide just told them to go into our car with our driver. Others had arrived in their own car and they also had to take a family of four into their car. The guide didn't ask if that was okay with everyone he just said that that was how it was going to be even though everyone seemed a bit uncomfortable with the arrangement. The forrest tour only took 1.5 hour as opposed to the 3 hour that was stated when we booked so we were very disappointed.
