Overview

Batik, textiles dyed using wax, is a signature of Yogyakarta. Learn the art and bring home a beautiful souvenir at this batik-making class, conveniently located near the Prambanan Temple Complex. You’ll trace a pattern, outline it in melted wax using traditional “canting” tools, then dye it in sequence to bring out the brilliant colors. As soon as it’s dry, the work is yours to take home.

    Batik experience

    It was about one hour from my hotel. I hired a private car and driver. The experience was wonderful. The process takes about 3hrs to draw, wax and paint. Then they dried it and soaked into a chemical solution and then in water. When I left it was still wet and place it on newspaper to dry in the car and hotel.

    Appreciate the one on one instruction! Our teacher was very patient and encouraged us even when we did not do a perfect job. Our first time and the hands lacked precision and control. But as he said, even when you are making a mistake, you are still making “art”.

    We had great time learning how to prepare batik. I would say it's a must if you happen to be in Yogya! Our children loved the whole process, especially the coloring :) We were taught by a local batik artist with huge experience, it was a real honor. And when the fabric was drying, we were taken to see the nearby temple - very old and beautiful. Highly recommend!

    Batik Painting near Prambahan

    Wonderful afternoon learning the art of batik in a beautiful space with a knowledgeable guide who documents your whole process. The tour also includes a visit to a nearby temple and snacks. This business supports the local woman by displaying their batik in its gallery. This was such a lovely experience, I highly recommend after your visit to Prambahan as it is 2 mins away!

    It's about 35 minutes from Malioboro, Yokyakarta, close to the Prambanan Temple. I rented a car with my dad to go there and spent around 3 - 4 hours drawing and waxing and painting. It's beautiful experience, especially the lady teacher was so knowledgable and showed me so many of her own professional designs, traditional and modern. She doesn't only teach but also produce and have program for the village ladies who want to learn and eventually sell their creation. I was always acompanied by her team from start to finish. I already prepared what I wanted to draw (turtle), and you can easily combine this program with visiting the Prambanan and other close by temple. Even they have the cycling in the rice fields near by. Thank you for being such a accommodating hosts, I truely enjoy the experience.

    We had a great Batik Master Class! A relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, a place to forget about everything and just get lost in art, a wonderful and very skilled indonesian teacher and a great english translator. Learned a lot about Batik art!

    Fun activity to cap off Prambanan

    This was the perfect activity after Prambanan as it is barely 10 minutes from there ! We were two couples and my friend really wanted to experience the whole batik making process as she’s abit of an artist herself . Upon arrival we were greeted with food and drinks . I had mentioned our company were vegetarian and had some food allergy and they accommodated that very well . We were then asked to select the design . Optionally we could do our own which my husband chose to do. You also had the choice to upgrade to designing a tote bag for a minimal charge . The whole process took less than 3 hours. Others in the class chose to walk around the area while waiting for their batik to dry as there is a nearby temple within walking distance. All in all it was a wonderful experience . The company was very professional and we gained a new found respect and appreciation for batik. Highly recommend will likely bring my adult kids next time!

    It was a great experience, once we reach there we were greated with snacks and drink. Explaination on the batik process in english. There's no right on wrong in the batik making process. I took the option to make a tote bag, just note that there is an extra charge and you need abit more time for the batik to try. They also took us to the sojiwan temple nearby (less than5mins away). You can also request for them to book you tickets to the temples
