What an amazing experience. the crew was awesome. we took our elderly parents and the staff was very gracious in helping them onto the boat and in and out of the water. the food was good overall. the chicken. was the highlight, so well cooked nd flavorful. Smaller boat and a more chill vibe than the "party boats". would definitely book this boat and crew again and recommend them 100%!

We had a wonderful time...

Maureen_P, Mar 2026
We had a wonderful time on the sunset cruise out on the Ocean. The crew was excellent, helpful, friendly and attentive to our needs. Drinks were flowing and the food was awesome. Loved our time getting refreshed in the ocean. Would do it again.

Highly Recommended

Andrew_S, Feb 2026
This was good fun and a great day out. We didn’t see any whales or dolphins. It would have been difficult to snorkel as it was quite rough, BUT the crew were great, the vibe was great, we were plied with cocktails, had a good meal, the sunset was great and it was probably the best value trip we have done in Costa Rica. My husband did do some research and looked at all the reviews and chose this one as it is a bit smaller and it was the right choice. It was not packed with people and we were the only ones to put a sail up.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

We put the sail up whenever possible...it's such a beautiful touch and has a magical feeling. sorry about the wildlife not cooperating...some days they just don't get the memo :( Im so glad you enjoyed your trip!!!

Amazing sunset cruise with an awesome crew

Thank you so much for your review...yes we get a lot of great feedback on that chicken!!

Great crew! They were all...

Jennifer_G, Feb 2026
Great crew! They were all attentive and on it with passing out beverages. Had a blast. The food and fruit they served was delish. Would recommend 10/10

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Thank you for the review...we hope you join us again sometime!

Super day!

JoDale_G, Feb 2026
Arriving at meet-up point was a little chaotic, but everyone at the beach was helpful and pointed us to the right place. The time on the catamaran was fantastic. Great bartender and good food. We saw whales, stingrays and the bioluminescence of the algae on our way back to shore. Recommend!

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Oh yes, this time of year the beach is hectic...we just got a new feather flag to help us stand out...our meeting location is very specific (Directly in front of Chiringuito Restaurant, on the beach side, under the tree) but its bonkers down there this time of year...glad you had a great time and thank you for your time in leaving a review :)

Warning!!!!!!!

Michael_B, Jan 2026
The captain and crew clearly had a girlfriend on board. When we stopped for swimming, the captain left the boat first with his girlfriend and disappeared. There weren’t any crew helping guests on and off boat, very dangerous in the windy conditions.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Hey I can assure you that we are feeling as violated and taken advantage of as you...when it comes to a staff member sneaking behind our back and going against company protocol, its obviously something we are not aware of or condone. This captain was a new captain in his review period and he will not be asked back...its important when leaving reviews and an obvious sneaky situation such as this where the owner of the business is not aware to reach out to the owner directly. We are devastated by this situation.

Book this adventure asap

JACQUELINE_J, Jan 2026
Book this asap. We had such a blast on this sunset cruise. From boarding the boat to drinks, music, staff everything was spot on. This boat had 25 ppl max which was perfect.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

What a fantastic review! Thank you so much! We put all our heart and soul into Caballo Del Mar and we love to hear feedback like this, you made our day!

Still 5 stars, but....

Zinnia_D, Dec 2025
The sunset views were beautiful, and the unlimited drinks were definitely a highlight; the crew made sure everyone always had a drink in hand. We even spotted a whale during the tour, and the guides were immediately on it and made sure everyone had a chance to see it, which was an unforgettable moment. The food was okay for being on a boat -- nothing special, but fine for the setting. Snorkeling was mentioned, but the snorkels were not out or clearly organized, so it wasn’t obvious how to get them. There were a lot of people eager to jump straight into the water, so it didn’t really impact us, especially since our kids brought their own gear. One small downside was that the tour guide seemed to give a bit more attention to some of the solo female guests, which was noticeable. However, the crew was very attentive overall -- my mom got sick during the trip, and they checked on her about every 30 minutes, which we really appreciated. Overall, it was a great sunset cruise with beautiful views, attentive service, wildlife sightings, and a fun atmosphere. Definitely a memorable experience while in Tamarindo.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

So glad you had a wonderful time...yes we've been told our crew can be flirty...there has been serious discussion and firm boundaries set with this now moving forward...you would think it goes without saying that they are there to work and attend to the guests professionally but this has been addressed. Its SO important we get any and all feedback like this so we can always be on top of these things...thank-you so much!

Great Experience!!!

Ashton_M, Dec 2025
Awesome crew that was there for everything. At the meeting point, there were several other companies catamaran crews leaving around the same time but when we found our guide he was very knowledgeable and informative. We stepped in to our shins to get in the panga at the beach so watch out for pants or long dresses. Short panga ride to the catamaran and an easy load up onto the boat. We had a smaller tour of only 7 individuals and received a welcome drink immediately! Throughout the ride we received very attentive service with drinks and snacks (fruit plate and chips with bean salsa.) After about an hour and a half ride to the secluded beach area with open bar (and open aux for music) we dove straight off the boat with the provided snorkeling gear, paddle boards and pool noodles to explore a beautiful volcanic rock reef for a little more than an hour. We got back on to enjoy our dinner of bbq chicken, yellow rice with veggies, pasta salad, roasted potatoes and corn. The crew was more than happy to fix us drinks all the way back to the bay, and they positioned us perfectly for a gorgeous sunset. After that we hopped back in the panga and returned right back to where we started. There’s nets on the front of the boat you can lounge in and pillows to proper your head on. There is also a bathroom on board! Cannot recommend this crew and company enough as they were super attentive!

Response from Host, Jan 2026

WOW what an amazing review!! You're making us blush with all these lovely compliments! We do aim to please :)

Definitely Recommend!

jacksonmadison05, Dec 2025
This tour was so much fun and definitely a highlight of our vacation to Tamarindo!! Our trip was only us plus one other group for a total of 8 people. This was really great because we saw a lot of other catamarans packed to the brim with people. The catamaran has different areas depending on where you want to be. You can sit under the shade or lay out at the front under the sun. Our crew consisted of Capitán Axel, Josue and Toto and they were all very friendly and helpful, plus they made delicious food and drinks! The boat takes you to a secluded beach where you can snorkel, paddleboard, or hang out on the beach. They provide snorkels, flippers, and noodles to float on, which were great to have. After about an hour, they called us back to have the meal that they prepared - and the meal was super delicious!! Some of the best chicken we’ve had in Tamarindo. Then you end the day watching the beautiful sunset and they offer to take photos and videos of you. We highly recommend this tour and company, Caballo Del Mar! Thank you for the great adventure.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

We had just re-opened after a 3 month renovation...you were one of the first tours out and we were still getting the word out that the reno's were completed so you got a nice quiet tour....Im so glad you enjoyed it!

Unsafe ladder

DJ_P, Feb 2025
The crew for the boat were awesome and made the best of a boat that is in much need of repair. The ladder for getting in and out for swimming was rope tied in place I lieu of the 4 bolts to secure and stay in place. It wobbled around d so much that it kicked up and cut the back of my husband’s legs. Kept bleeding for quite awhile. As I said, the crew was great and did immediately address with cleaning and wrapping. Also, if you hope to sail on a nice day, don’t count on it. Rigging has been broken for awhile now. Giving this better than a 0 for the crew.

Response from Host, Feb 2025

That is categorically untrue. The ladder is telescopic, it is bolted in place but the rungs of the ladder are on a swivel and this allows its position up for storage while the boat is in motion! Simply tying a ladder to a boat is very obviously impossible and still have it hold the weight of 200+ lb men, like I said it swivels..and that does make it have some give up and down on its hinge. it was noted in the incident report that your husband received a superficial scratch caused by barnacles, it was also noted his pre-existing condition as very obvious diabetic dermopathy, which caused him to walk with a cane and his legs were very red and swollen....also another symptom is slow to heal wounds, which I'm sure is why it took a while to stop bleeding. The staff also noted he required a life ring to get back to the boat because he had trouble even swimming due to his condition. As for the sails, we raise the sails almost daily...it depends on the weather. We did not have the sails up that day because it was too windy and the captain made that announcement, I'm sorry if you missed that but making assumptions about things you don't know hurts ppls business and is so incredibly disappointing. I have offered to send you a video of the sails out today if the wind cooperates. I am sorry your husband scratched his leg while a wave hit him and the ladder moved, but most of what you said is misinformation I'm afraid.

great tour/experience!

Briana_B, Feb 2025
Had a blast! Loved the crew. Came alone and it took my group a while to warm up but eventually it was a really fun time and well worth the tour

Response from Host, Mar 2025

Thank you so much for coming! We are so glad you enjoyed your trip :)

Fun in the sun

Roschelle_M, Jan 2025
We had an amazing time. We were a family of 4 adults ( 1 being a senior ) and 2 kids under the age of 10. Getting on the smaller boat that brings you out to the larger boat was tricky but the crew were extremely helpful and patient. Once on the boat it was fun from beginning to end. The music was great, drinks flowing and the snacks/ food were just right.

Response from Host, Jan 2025

We loved having you aboard too! Thanks so much...each and every review means the world to us. We put our whole heart into offering the best experience.

Family of 4, everyone had a great experience!

Rebecca_F, Jul 2024
The ride, the crew, the ocean fun were all 5 star wonderful!! We went with our 9 and 3 year old. The staff was great and attended to everyone’s needs and were great company. (The cocktails are a great bonus ;)

Response from Host, Jul 2024

Thank so much!! we love to hear happy stories. Thrilled you had a great time. visit again soon!

Mechanical failure

Joanne_H, Jun 2024
I arranged this trip in January 2024, and here it is June, 2024. I received a text message two hours before boarding that the trip was cancelled due to engine problems. Too late to make other plans. Very disappointed.

Response from Host, Jul 2024

Unfortunately that morning we had a mechanical failure.. We contacted you as soon as we found out the one engine wouldn't start. We offered you 3 options (I still have the text messages as proof) 1) to transfer to another boat, 2) a full refund or 3) to change dates. You chose the full refund but we absolutely had another catamaran lined up, with the same hours, open bar, similar meal, same meeting location, same time and identical in every way except it was a different catamaran/company. Mechanical failures happen, not often but believe me when I say they are more disappointing to us than you. Had you taken the transfer to the other boat, there wouldn't have been a mis step in your day. I wish you would have taken the transfer as the other customers did, you would have had a wonderful day.

Was very disappointing for our first time in Costa Rica.

Joy_H, Apr 2024
A couple of the locals were acting inappropriately towards my daughter. One guy was very disrespectful.

Response from Host, Jun 2024

We are sorry that you had a bad experience with one of the other guests. This issue has nothing to do with our staff or a representative of our business in any way though. To be clear, one of the guests was being flirtatious with your adult daughter? Was it possible to alert our staff for assistance if you needed it? At any time was anyone in danger? I would be interested to hear more of this incident. I assure you our staff would not have allowed for anything dangerous to happen if they were alerted to what was going on. We often have flirty people meeting on the boat, or couples...theres no way for us to know unless we are told if the guests advances aren't welcome. But I assure you had you spoken to our staff we would have communicated with the guest that his behaviour was not reciprocated or appreciated. Im sorry you had a bad time :(

5 hr sunset cruise with lunch and beverages

Peter_A, Apr 2024
I highly recommend this smaller boat, crew and participants. Good food, relaxing, nice picturesque private beach area to swim or float to. Calm waters.

Response from Host, Apr 2024

Thank you Peter! Come visit us again any time!

The Best Day Ever

Kimberly_S, Mar 2024
I 10/10 recommend booking this cruise. The captain and crew are very friendly and accommodating. At the pick up spot you will meet your guide. He will explain a few things and take you to the small boat which you will take out the the catamaran. You will not be able to take shoes, they will be left on a cubby on the small boat. This is so the catamaran doesn’t get all sandy. They will take you out to a private beach.. serve you drinks and fruit on the way which is delicious. Once we arrived to the beach they dropped the anchor and you can swim out to the beach from there. They have noodles, paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, etc. The water where they take you is so pretty, its a turquoise color. I believe it was a black sand beach which which was pretty cool! Other catamarans post up there as well. You get served a nice buffet dinner which was really good. They had chicken, rice, pasta salad… few other things. I really did have the time of my life! I met so many people from all over the world. Everyone was so nice. I still remember the names of the crew. John was captain, and then there was Renee, Richard, and Carlos. All were so nice. They gave us a lot of pointers on where to go and what to see in Costa Rica. Very nice people and very hospitable. I really admire that they get up and do this everyday. There’s a lot to it. It’s not an easy job but they love what they do and I really admire that a lot. If you’re looking for a spectacular time in Tamarindo, then book your cruise with them because you will not regret it. Thanks again for having us on your cruise John! Pura Vida!!

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Kimberly, what a stunnin' review, so thoughtful and detailed. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell our story and the memories you made spending the afternoon with us. Reviews like this make our hearts sing! We couldn't be happier that we had the opportunity to build a lasting and happy memory for you! I hope you visit us again sometime. Big Love from Caballo Del Mar!

Nice day on the water to make new friends.

Tonyd, Mar 2024
Small boat means small number of people. Not the party about all though. Plenty of liquor to quench your thirst. This is a Boat for friends and people who want to enjoy and be present and not for those who want to dance and drink and party. fabulous crew good food. My wife doesn’t even like chicken and she said the chicken is very good. Fairly basic barbecue chicken and sauce. Canned corn potatoes baked roasted very good rice a little dry. The only reason I didn’t get five is because the winch is broken and I cannot sail, and the music speaker system was not charged up enough to last entire cruise. Be careful snorkeling, because they do not make sure that those who are advanced have a body.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Even without the winch broken (the part has just arrived from the UK, YAY! it took 2 weeks) the sails don't get up every single time. Sometimes the winds are too strong, other times too soft. Having the sails up is not a guarantee on any trip. Its always our intention to put the sails up as often as we can though, it saves gas and its beautiful. I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of the experience though. Pura Vida!

Great times!

Carole_G, Mar 2024
Great times, we had so much fun, plenty of food and drink! Highly recommend! The only negative was that we never put up the sails.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Hello, we just had a winch break last week, the parts are coming all the way from the UK. Its always a challenge to get anything in Costa Rica, but we are on it, should be here any day! Sorry you missed out on the sails, truthfully we can't put them up every trip anyway. If the wind is too strong or too weak they don't go up, so even without the broken winch its not a guarantee. We do put them up every chance we get though, saves on gas and they're beautiful win win!

Absolutely awesome!

Jason_A, Feb 2024
The entire trip was amazing! I highly recommend. Staff was excellent and entertaining. The views and the beach were amazing. I’ve been scammed on some “excursions” but not these guys. They are the real deal.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

So happy you had a great time! Sad to hear others have scammed you! Visit us again if you are ever in town, Pura Vida!

Fun time!

Alona_R, Feb 2024
So much fun, we had an awesome time. Open bar, great food just amazing! I would definitely do again in Costa Rica

Response from Host, Feb 2024

We are thrilled you enjoyed your time! That is what it is all about!

Incredible Last Day

Toni_M, Jan 2024
What a great way to spend our last day in Costa Rica. The whole experience was incredible. The crew was absolutely fantastic, friendly accommodating, we snorkeled and he showed us where to go to see cool fish and a stingray. Unfortunately we didn’t see any dolphins but that was ok because the sunset was stunning enough. There was only 10 people so it wasn’t loud and crazy like the other boats. There could be updates on boat that would finish the experience but overall we had an incredible day!

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Sorry about the dolphins, they don't always cooperate :( but we are thrilled you had a wonderful time. :)

Nice boat day no wildlife sightings

Carole_S, Jan 2024
The trip was overall was a fun boat day but there were several cons to make note of. Did not see any dolphins or whales, ceviche was promised and not given, toilet was broken at the end (due to patrons not following the rules) so no where to use restroom, food was mediocre compared to other tours I’ve been on. Overall still had an enjoyable boat day with friends and the crew was very kind but would consider these items if you’re torn between which company to book with. One pro to us was that Our catamaran was smaller than others so it held about 25 people versus some other ones we saw that had no shade at 50ish people.

Response from Host, Feb 2024

Thank you for letting us know about the ceviche, your feedback is valuable. We had removed the ceviche from the menu a few weeks back (it was just too messy) and didn't notice it was still listed in one area on the Viator/Trip Advisor listing. We have corrected this error. As for the menu, it is built to be fairly neutral to appease many tastes and dietary restrictions as well as vegetarians. It is certainly not fine dinning as you can see from the menu...its meant to help soak up the drinking and fill up the masses, but we have gotten huge compliments from all of our guests and vendors. While it is a simple menu, it is delicious and filling. As well all of the resellers/providers in Tamarindo tell us it is the best and most filling menu of all of the other group charter boats. In the future if your focus is on the food, You'd definitely be able to customize a more upscale menu on a private charter that might be more your specific taste. Thank-you again for your feedback!

Don’t go on this

Veronica_P, Jan 2024
Don’t be fooled by the 5 stars. This trip was not five stars it was barely 1. The conditions for the trip were very windy and the waters were very rough that day, these crews set sail everyday they should know what conditions are safe or even enjoyable. The woman who was taking us out onto the catamaran in small groups on a smaller boat was very aggressive and the whole thing seemed very unorganized and unsafe. When we got on the boat, the crew was nice that’s the only reason I’m giving this one star. The conditions led to other guests throwing up nonstop and the crew did nothing to assist or clean up the bathroom for the rest of the guests. In addition, The people that were on the boat were acting totally barbaric. The conditions were windy, and the crew didn’t do anything to address that. Therefore this caused people to be sick in addition to them smoking weed on the boat which the crew did nothing to regulate. They threw up all over the toilets, into the sinks and were even boasting about it. ( one reason being sea sickness due to the conditions, second was due to them smoking and drinking and getting sick all over the boat) on the way back none of us could use the restrooms so those who had to really go were completely disadvantaged. The crew didn’t cut the trip short or do anything to address the conditions of the bathrooms. They should have cut these people off but instead served them more drinks. I would not recommend going as you don’t know what types of people will be on your catamaran I suggest booking a more Private experience.

Response from Host, Feb 2024

We are sympathetic to your experience, and are devastated you didn't have a true Caballo Del Mar Experience that we work tirelessly to provide each and every guest. The seas got rougher upon the route home and were within safety perimeters, all of the boats sailed that day. That one large group did ruin it for everyone on the boat that day, it is really hard to determine in advance how ppl we behave. Our staff did make their drinks virgin drinks (without their knowledge) in an attempt to curb their behaviour, Im assuming their "extra curricular activities" above the drinks (not approved, allowed or authorized by our staff), combined with the rough seas created an explosive situation in the bathroom. The entire situation was overwhelming and not enjoyable for guests or crew. If you are ever back in Tamarindo, please reach out for a free ticket so we can have the opportunity to show you the true Caballo Del Mar Experience. Warmest Regards.

Familial et sympathique

Anne_G, Mar 2024

Response from Host, Mar 2024
