Diego Gomez was our guide for the day. From the start, he kept us interested during the pickups and drive out to the volcano with well-delivered information about El Salvador. He answered any questions we had along the way. The traffic in El Salvador is very bad so be aware that you will shave hours off your time in the shuttle if you get picked up in El Salvador instead of El Zonte or other outlying region. Diego timed stops along the hike to point out trees, birds and certain plants that make their home on the side of the volcano. We were lucky to be able to summit the volcano in good weather. Diego patiently took many photos of each member of the group at the 3 lookouts and at the summit. Incredible views at the top! Do not miss otherworldly color of the water in the crater at the summit. Afterwards we enjoyed a wonderful lunch overlooking the lake. All in all very worth it.

This is a moderate-difficult hike. There is an elevation and part of the hike is all rock so if you don’t have good balance it could be difficult. Would not be great for those in their 70’s or 80’s or very young children. I’m in shape and had no problem. Group was too large. We had to keep stopping and waiting. Tour guide not very informative and didn’t add much to the experience. Beautiful at the top. Lunch was ok. Everyone is taken to one restaurant overlooking the lake. Food not great. View pretty but not amazing.

Great day with Diego and a small group. Volcano hike is very manageable with a moderate level of fitness and very worth it. Lunch was also great overlooking the lake. Good day. Recommend

Josuè was extremely knowledgeable about El Salvador and was very friendly and funny. The hike was a challenge-but a good one-and the views were amazing.

Josue was an incredible guide! You must do this activity and make sure to ask for him. It was a perfect day for our family!

What an AMAZING day. Francis (driver) and Josue (tour guide) where fantastic. I did this tour as a solo female traveler and could not have felt more safe. I was picked up at my hotel and after a brief stop to grab any food/drinks we wanted, we went to the volcano.
Throughout the ride, Josue took the time to tell us about his country's history and current day facts. He also told us what to expect for the day ahead. He spoke in both English and Spanish for all of the participants.
The first part of the volcano was HARD. My breathing was terrible trying to adjust to the altitude. After about 45 minutes and a few stops, it got better. Josue made sure everyone in our group was keeping pace and stopping as needed. We all made it to the TOP. The ascent took about 2.5 hours.... *Please note that this trip requires you be physically fit/able to truly hike*
It was cloudy and we couldn't see the crater but then all of a sudden the clouds went away and WHAT A SIGHT! Absolutely stunning. We stayed taking pictures and eating popsicles for about 40 minutes before descending back down. The way down took about 1.5 hours maybe....
Then we went to Lago de Coatepeque. The views and food at the restaurant were great. I was able to order my food and then rent a jetski from a different vendor (not a part of this tour). So much fun!!!!
Josue was a great guide and I highly recommend this trip with him.

This tour was really great....fantastc atmosphere thanks to a great group of people and our guide Josué who was so kind and patient and wanted to make sure we all had a great time our driver Francis was also great and very efficient and helpful. This is a moderate hike so not too easy but you don't need to be a professional mountain climber to reach the summit and once you get there the view of that crater is pure magic.... definitely an unforgettable experience. The lunch at the lake was also very pleasant with beautiful views of the volcanos with a lake in the backdrop as we dined on the pier...you can swim or take a jet ski ride after ordering food by the time you get back from the water the food will be ready for you. This your was impeccably put together...

Very thoughtful journey to Santa Ana. Josue was fun, friendly and extremely knowledgeable, sharing a lot about local history and the current way of life. Pace of hike was good with an amazing reward at the top!

I highly recommend going on this tour. If you’re still debating it…just book it! It wasn’t easy, and does require a decent amount of physical fitness, but it was so worth it. But more so, it was worth it because of our guide alone. Diego was absolutely amazing! I’ve been on several tours like this in different countries, but the level of care and helpfulness that he showed to not only myself but the entire group was among the best I ever experienced! It’s clear that he takes pride in what he does and wants to help people experience his amazing country in its true authenticity. I hope to have an opportunity to tour with him again. Just be sure to hydrate, eat before you go, and wear comfortable shoes with good traction.

So we booked this a day before and the communication was clear from the start. The bus was clean and air conditioned which was very much needed. While en route to the volcano the guide Joshua (English translation) gave us a break down of El Salvador’s history, which we found very interesting. We arrived at Santa Ana and Joshua explained how the tour would go. We made our way up the volcano and Joshua was very informative and was on hand to take those all important photos. The views from the top are spectacular. Well worth the trek up. We then made our way down after having about 1/2hr up on the crater. The way down was definitely quicker but still challenging. Please be aware you do get very dusty. After coming down we head to a restaurant for some food and we opted to eat at the top of another volcano looking over a lake. This was again an amazing view. This is a must experience. Had an absolute blast.

Climbing Santa Ana Volcano in El Salvador was an absolutely unforgettable experience. Our guide, Diego, went above and beyond to make sure we made it all the way to the crater—especially meaningful since the day before, bad weather caused many tours to be cut short. Diego was incredibly kind, patient, and knowledgeable, making the hike feel safe, supported, and fun the entire time.
The hike itself was a a-little difficult—there are definitely some challenging sections, but it’s very doable and 100% worth it. (I am not a hiker lol) The crater lake is breathtaking, and ending the hike at the restaurant was the perfect touch. Do not skip the watermelon juice… it was SO good. Highly recommend this experience and Diego as your guide!

I workout 6 days a week but this hike still tested me. I pushed myself and my guide helped motivate me too. Speaking of guide, JOSUE is amazing!!! He is so knowledgeable and personable. Really thankful to have him a guide, his passion for the job shines through. After the hike we enjoyed jet skiing while our lunch cooked. Awesome tour!
