Go to the desert but maybe with a different group!

Overall, being in the desert was a once in a lifetime experience that I’m really glad we did. Being from the US, the dunes of the Sahara foothills were unlike anything we’d seen before. It was also awesome to get to ride a camel. It was an unforgettable experience. We rode about 1.5 hours on a camel (not the most comfortable but super cool!), arrived at our camp (there were lots of other camps around, ours being the most basic but that’s what we’d paid for so it was expected), and were served some tea. After some time we ate a Moroccan dinner of tajine, then spent some time at a drum circle at a nearby camp. Finally we tried to sleep in the tent which was basic but nice. The challenge sleeping was the heat, but that was to be expected given we were there in August! It was about 85°f at night and it was hard to get airflow in the tent. In the morning we woke up and watched the sunrise from camp before heading back on our camels and arriving around 8:30am to Merzouga. That being said, our hosts on this tour in particular were not the most attentive. I’m not sure if we chose the wrong group to go with or if it would have been similar across the board, but we did not get much engagement from our hosts. It felt like we got what we paid for while the people next door with nicer tents may have had a more engaging experience. For example, we were told there would be a drum circle after dinner, but they did not tell us that it had started at the camp next door and that we should not expect our own. In the morning, we were told there would be a hike up the dunes to see the sunrise, but no one from the camp was around when we woke up at 6 as advertised, so we walked around a bit ourselves. The guides appeared to do the minimum to keep us comfortable and kept to themselves. In the end it was a worthwhile experience that we are very happy we got to do, but it may be worth upgrading or choosing a different group to do the tour with.

¡¡¡¡ Experiencia excepcional !!!! Rachid, cercano en todo momento, nos contacto por WhatsApp ya antes de viajar, lo cual se agradece muchísimo ya que si te surgen dudas en algún momento, está totalmente accesible, habla y escribe castellano muy bien. Yusef e Ismail nos acompañaron en el trayecto, gracias por todo! Sois unos guias y personas de diez, gracias por esta experiencia preciosa! El paseo en camello hasta el campamento duró unas dos horas y fue divertidisimo! Los guías nos hicieron fotos sin pedirlas y los camellos eran muy bonitos y dóciles. Nos iban explicando muchas cosas interesantes sobre su cultura y el desierto. Paramos para ver el atardecer con fotos inolvidables. El campamento bonito, nos esperaban con te y pastas. Las haimas muy cómodas, espaciosas, dormimos muy a gusto! No pasamos frio. En nuestro caso, el baño lo compartíamos y estaba al lado mismo de la haima, limpio y cómodo. La cena y el desayuno abundante y rico. Fiesta de tambores incluida con otros campamentos donde reafirman su hospitalidad y pasas un rato divertido también. Amanecer precioso y tras desayunar, vuelta a Merzouga, llegada sobre las 10:00h Ojalá hubieramos tenido más tiempo para quedarnos un día más!! Aunque mentiría si dijera que no me dolió un poco el culo a la vuelta jajaja, merece la pena la experiencia 100% !! Shokran
