    Theyyam

    Sheena_M, Feb 2026
This was a 4 hour authentic theyyam in a temple. It was fascinating to watch the ritual and see hundreds of people waiting to be blessed by the deity who is believed to be fully possessed by a deity. There are long periods of just seeing blessings as there are so many people seeking blessings. The monks attend to every aspect of the deity's transition, doing makeup and costume adjustment as well as playing instruments at times. I'm not quite sure how he could check himself in the mirror when he was in a trance. The tour would be greatly improved if the guide explained exactly what was happening at each stage. I had to ask if I could move to another area to see what was happening there. The guide should have been leading me so I didn't miss anything. I left just before the end there he transitions back to a person by removing his headgear as it was very long drawn out.
