Carlos and Elsa are wonderful hosts! The walk through the market was fun and informative. Carlos explained interesting foods and culture. Elsa and her daughter were a joy to cook with! I love to cook, so the explanations and tips they gave were great. Elsa even gave me some helpful hints when I told her about an event I'm hosting this fall. Whether you love to cook or just want to have fun, this class is a blast. And my husband now knows hot to make guacamole!

    Unbelievable foodie experience

Carlos and Elsa were wonderful hosts. The day started with Carlos picking us up at our Airbnb and taking us through one of the local markets where we grabbed a few last-minute ingredients and got a glimpse of everyday life in Zihuatanejo. From there we went to Elsa and Carlos’s home where Elsa walked us through making several traditional dishes including sopes, tamales, chili rellenos, enchiladas and taquitos, along with fresh salsas and guacamole. Everything was hands-on and relaxed, and Elsa was a great teacher. Make sure you come hungry because there is a lot of food by the end. It was a really fun day and a great way to experience authentic Mexican cooking. Highly recommend this experience if you’re visiting Zihuatanejo.

So much fun! Be ready to eat a lot!

We had a fantastic time in this cooking class. Elsa and Carlos are fantastic hosts, and Elsa and her daughter were great at taking us through each dish we made and the how to prepare each ingredient in each dish. I would definitely recommend this when visiting Zihuatanejo or Ixtapa.

Amazing experience, perfect balance of participating in the cooking while the hosts (Elsa and her family) did the heavy lifting. You make a lot of food, so come hungry! It was nicely spaced so that you eat a mini brunch shortly after arriving so you get hungry again for the subsequent big lunch. The market tour was cool to experience the local shopping routines and see all the vendors. Plan for the entire experience to take half of your day, we finished around 1:30pm.

    Great experience!

Carlos and Elsa are warm and welcoming hosts and provided a great experience. From the tour of the market to opening their home to teach us how to make Mexican favorites, it was a first-rate experience.

Wonderful market tour & personalized cooking class

After being picked up at your hotel, Carlos starts the day with a very informative tour of the local market. Amazing way to orient yourself for future shopping! After selecting market fresh produce, class actually starts in their private home. This class is like no other.... 10/10 The class is personalized to the huge menu for your diet, interest & culinary aspirations. Outstanding day!

Exceptional at home authentic cooking experience

    brenda_j, Feb 2026
This was an exceptional experience. Carlos picked us up and we had a grand ZIHUA market tour (along with some last minute shopping for the class). With Elsa and he daughter, we made hibiscus tea, guacamole, sopas, enchiladas, tamales, chile relleno , taquitos. We had coconut candy dessert and feasted. Beverages of plenty were available. We felt welcome at their home. Be prepared to dig in. They provide aprons so no need to worry about attire. They take photos so you don’t have to while your hands are in the mess preparing your dishes. We can’t wait to try the recipes back at home (they send those as well). It’s a fun day. We highly recommend it! You can find them on Facebook ‘zihua cooking class’ and book direct with Carlos or Elsa . I don’t see a place to add pics here 🤔

    Perfectly wonderful delicious day!

Relaxed , interesting hands on experience. Simple menu with ingredients that are easy to work with and purchase in many areas of USA. Don’t know about Canada!

    Unbelievable foodie experience!

There aren’t enough stars to rate this excursion. Elsa and Carlos are fantastic hosts. Carlos picked us up at our hotel, and guided us through the local markets to pick up our feast ingredients, while Elsa led us on a gastronomic masterpiece in their charming home. Sopes, tamales, chili rellenos, enchiladas and taquitos are all on the menu, as well as the salsas and guacamole to go along side. The highlight of my trip!

    Magnifico!

    Keely_H, Jan 2026
Carlos picked us up and gave us a wonderful shopping tour of everyday life. Then on to his beautiful home where Elsa graciously instructed us in the excellent home style cooking of the generations of her family. Among the many dishes we learned to prepare, making enchilada sauce from scratch was incredible! My husband says he is now spoiled and may never be able to eat in a restaurant again!

Awesome authentic experience! We loved going to the market with Carlos and getting to learn from Elsa inside their home. They are a lovely couple! We loved Zihuatanejo and this day was really special. Delicious food!

    A cooking class to remember!

    Roger_H, Apr 2025
Carlos and Selma invited us into their home where we enjoyed both a relaxing experience and new methods of creating dishes we have always enjoyed. This was so much more than the usual programmed cooking class. We felt that at least for a few hours we became a part of their family,

    Wonderful day

    Jeff_T, Apr 2025
Carlos picked us up from our hotel and we went to the market. It is an exotic maze of stalls that sell almost everything. The variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, chilies, flours, corn products, coffee, and all kinds of kitchen tools and dishware is unrivaled by any large grocery or superchain. The prices are also a fraction of what you find in other store. We found it fascinating even though there were some things that we would never consider buying. We then went to his beautiful home with a huge shaded garden where his wife Elsa was already doing some pre-prep. We had some delicious herbal tea before starting our cooking adventure. We learned how to make sopas, toquitos, stuffed fire roasted poblano peppers, tamales in corn husks, and delicious salsas. Elsa was even able to accommodate my wife's cow dairy allergy with tasty alternatives. We had a toast of mezcal prior to eating. While we are not typically fond of mezcal, their offering was a pleasant surprise. The food was delicious as we enjoyed some red wine and continued to learn about Zihuatanejo and other places they lived. The tour has certainly been the highlight of our awesome vacation.

Authentic and j extremely fun and pleasant day!

This was one of the best excursions we have ever been on. Both Carlos and Elsa are amazing hosts and welcomed us into their beautiful home. It was truly a hands-on experience from marketing with Carlos to cooking with Elsa is an extraordinary experience. Elsa is an excellent teacher as well as chef. We would definitely do another excursion and recommend highly.

    Excellent, very well...

Excellent, very well presented, small group, transportation provided. Made and ate several different dishes

    Highly recommended….

This is a wonderful tour, organized by husband and wife team Carlos and Elsa. Touring the market and picking up fresh produce with Carlos was fascinating, but the best part was when he dropped us off at their lovely home for a cooking lesson with Elsa and delicious lunch. If you are interested in meeting a delightful local couple, having a hands-on lesson as you learn about Mexican cuisine, and enjoying a delicious lunch, this is the tour for you.

    Class is Amazing. Viator sucks.

The cooking school experience was wonderful and great fun, however dealing with Viator was horrible and if you can find any other way to book this class do it.
