If you’re even remotely curious about Japanese culture, horses, or just want to try something truly unforgettable, Barikiya’s Yabusame experience near Mt. Fuji is a must-do. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the iconic mountain and framed by the full bloom of cherry blossoms, the setting alone feels like stepping into a historical painting. The staff at Barikiya were all incredibly kind, attentive, and genuinely passionate about sharing the world of traditional mounted archery. They made sure everyone felt welcome, and the presence of English-speaking staff made the whole experience smooth and accessible, even for non-Japanese speakers. Located at Komuro Sengen Shrine, which added a spiritual and cultural depth to the day. The horses were gentle and well-cared-for, and the hands-on approach to learning Yabusame was thrilling yet approachable—perfect for complete beginners and experienced riders alike. This is more than just an activity; it’s a cultural immersion, a scenic adventure, and a moment of pure connection with Japanese tradition. Highly, highly recommended for all ages and experience levels. You’ll leave with unforgettable memories—and maybe a new passion.

    This was so fun! I...

This was so fun! I originally tried to book through Barikiya’s website, but it was confusing so Viator worked very well. Our instructor Yoni was wonderful and so funny! She gave us a tour of the shrine and explained all of the parts and made sure we had time to shop too. She’s very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. We really enjoyed our time with Yoni—it was like hanging out with an old friend! We got to dress up, meet all of the horses, practice archery from the ground, ride, and then of course try horseback archery! The little Kiso horse knows his job and took great care of my 11 year old daughter. At the same time, I have riding experience and he was fun for me too! Completely recommend this experience. This was the highlight of our trip! Thank you!

    Fun horse and archery experience

It was a fabulous experience! The guides were so welcoming. It was lovely to see the shrine especially with the horse spirit connection. It was fun to dress up. The archery and especially from horseback was super cool!

    Absolutely lovely...

Absolutely lovely experience from start to finish. As a family of riders and Japanese history enthusiasts, this was the number one activity I was excited to experience with my family and it did not disappoint. Everyone was so lovely and we really appreciated getting to experience the temple nearby as well. I also loved meeting all the rescue horses that they keep there. Will definitely be back!

A memorable and fun experience in Fujiyoshida

    Wayne_L, Nov 2025
Really had a wonderful time learning about horseback riding and archery here in Fujiyoshida. The staff/instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and kind and friendly, and we really appreciate them walking us through everything as complete novices. We got to do a little bit of everything, see the local shrine, learn a little about local culture and history, meet and feed the horses, take some practice archery shots, ride the horses, and then combine everything together at the end. Additionally, we were able to take lots of great photos to commemorate the experience as well (with some help again from the staff)! Highly recommend, thanks again so much BARIKIYA!
