Sarlat la Caneda Gourmet Market Tour

Judy, Apr 2026
We can not recommend this tour highly enough. C’est supérbe! Anne is a seasoned local and an extremely knowledgeable tour guide. She took us to a number of significant historical sites within the old town and regaled us with many wonderful stories about Sarlat and its people. Our tour was interspersed with three delightful tasting stops to whet our palates. A tour not to be missed!!! J & H Australia

Great Introduction to Sarlat

Susan_F, Oct 2025
This tour is a great way to gain a quick understanding of the town and the history of Sarlat and its main two outdoor markets, along with some of the best cheese and other markets in town. We discovered some great regional food and wine that we purchased to bring home. Benoit was a delightful tour guide, and the whole experience was very entertaining.

This market tour is amazing!

Elin_S, Sep 2025
This is not only a tour of the market but also includes a tour of the town and historical monuments. Anne is a wonderful guide and makes history come to life in her delivery of the information. We loved every moment of our time with her. She was delightful. The tastings were delicious and highlighted local products. We highly recommend this tour!

Fun way to learn about the region

Nywood_W, Sep 2025
Good for first time visitors to the area. Our guide was good and knowledgeable about the products from the region.

More history than gourmet

Constance_B, Jun 2025
We are a small group who has travelled together many times. We take a Food Tour to help plan our shopping and restaurant visits during our stay. This tour was more focused on local history and less on food. Our guide was very friendly and his English was adequate. He was unable to answer some of our food questions but was willing to ask the vendor. The tour visited only three store-front establishments and stopped at none of the street market vendors. Therefore, we could have easily and more conveniently done this tour on a ‘non-market’ day and avoided all the crowds. We all prefer a more immersive experience when sampling local offerings.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Dear Constance, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We're glad to hear that your guide was friendly and made the effort to assist with your questions, even when unsure. However, we’re sorry to learn that the tour didn’t fully align with your expectations. This experience is designed as a blend between a gourmet tasting and a cultural discovery of the area, which is why it includes not only food stops but also historical and local insights. The three store-front tastings are clearly mentioned in the tour description, and while we understand that some guests may prefer a more food-only experience, many appreciate the mix of culinary and cultural immersion. Regarding the market day: it’s true that it can get crowded, but we intentionally schedule the tour on those days to let our guests experience the vibrant, authentic atmosphere of a local market in full swing. We believe that this energy and ambiance are part of what makes the experience truly memorable, even if it’s sometimes a bit busy. We truly appreciate your comments and will certainly take them into account as we continuously work to improve our tours and better align them with our guests’ expectations. Kind regards, Jeanne from the Ophorus Team

Catherine_V, Oct 2024
Maarten was an excellent guide. Although I had been in Sarlat for a few days prior, his narration of the locations and events of the town was much more than I’d learned through reading and exploring on my own. The tastings exceeded my expectations. After this tour, I had a much greater understanding of Sarlat history and culture.

Response from Host, Nov 2024

Disappointing experience

Kristine_M, Oct 2024
Loved the shopping and seeing the village. The tour was disorganized and unprofessional. Our guide obviously has potential to be a good guide, but she was not at her best when we were her clients.

Response from Host, Oct 2024

We appreciate your review and are glad you enjoyed the shopping and village aspects of the tour. Your comments about the tour’s organization and professionalism are very important to us. It sounds like our guide might have had an off day, and for that, we sincerely apologize. Rest assured, we are addressing this issue to enhance our services. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we hope to welcome you again for a better experience.

Highly recommend!!

GAIL_Z, Sep 2024
Anne was consistently cheerful, knowledgeable about the entire Dordogne area, and particularly informative about Sarlat She answered any and all questions and introduced us to 3 extremely good sources for cheese, truffles, fois gras, and more. We were delighted with the tour

Great market tour of Sarlat

Brad_W, Apr 2024
We had a great tour of Sarlat with Anne. She guided us through the Saturday market, which is one of the best we have seen in Europe, and pointed out interesting historical sights along the way. We stopped at three different shops to taste foie gras, spectacular cheeses, and walnut pastries. We highly recommend this tour.

Sarlat market and food tour

Tonya_W, May 2023
Anna, our guide, was excellent. The establishments were friendly and generous with their time and provisions. Town and history were intriguing.

Bit of gourmet and history

Jonathan_T, Apr 2023
Our guide was excellent; he went at a great pace, was informative and mixed history with local gourmet information. As we were the first tour of the season the first two tasting shoppes were not prepared for us so he took us to the last three on the tour which offered great samples as well as a walk through the indoor market. This is great walking tour.

Worth the money and your time.

Valerie_M, Oct 2022
This tour has a nice mix of the history of Sarlat and the food of the Périgord Noir. Our tour guide was Benoit. He was knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and had a nice demeanor. This tour is worth the price and your time.

Excellent Market Overview

keith_f, Apr 2019
Ben was excellent in giving us an overview of local products (walnuts, wine, fruit, foi gras) along with tastings with some of the vendors. This is a large market and definitely worth going on a Wed/Sat. He also gave us a tips on how to evaluate foi gras vendors and types of products offered. Very helpful with the bewildering offerings. Afterwards, you can use what we learned to shop more intelligently.
