There is no other boat like this in Australia. The Thundercat doesn't just power through the water, it jumps it. Just 1.5 hours from Melbourne, your 30-minute ride takes you along the wild coastline of Cape Woolamai to places simply unreachable by land: the granite quarry, the dramatic sea caves, and Bird Rock. From time to time you'll also spot seals lounging on the rocks or playing in the surf. Your Captain delivers live commentary on the island's landscape and history. What stands out is how personal it is. Not happy with full throttle? Your Captain reads the group and adjusts. Young kids or someone nervous? Start slow, build up, and by the end they'll be asking for more And here's the part that surprises most people: you won't get wet. All the speed, all the adrenaline and you step off completely dry. Tick it off in the morning and spend the rest of the day exploring the island. This half-hour trip fits neatly into any Phillip Island itinerary, morning, midday, or afternoon.

Coastal Cliffs of Phillip Island: Audio Tour of Cape Woolamai

Cape Woolamai was shaped by millions of years of violent ocean swells and fierce Antarctic winds. On this coastal self-guided audio tour, you’ll discover how this dramatic granite headland became the setting for one of Australia’s most successful conservation programs. You’ll also explore sea caves carved by hydraulic action, pink granite cliffs that supplied stone for Melbourne’s Parliament House, and the nesting grounds of seabirds that migrate 15,000 kilometres from Alaska each year. The tour starts at Woolamai Surf Beach, a designated National Surfing Reserve known for its powerful waves and dangerous rip currents. Along the way, you’ll hear about how George Bass landed his open whaleboat in 1798, naming this fish-shaped headland after the Eora word for snapper, and explore the ruins of the granite quarry that once supplied stone for Melbourne’s iconic buildings. The tour ends back at the Woolamai Surf Beach car park where you began your journey.

What are the best tours on Phillip Island?

Are guided tours on Phillip Island worth it?

Yes, guided tours of Phillip Island are worth it. A guide adds real value out on the water and along the coast, offering commentary while you enjoy the Penguin Parade or scan for seals and whales. Most include round-trip transportation from Melbourne, so there's no need to stress about timings or the drive.

Per one customer who booked the Phillip Island Seal-Watching Cruise, "Amazing experience, best part of our family trip to Phillip Island. Highly recommended. Operator has provided great service, and they have many staff to support all the visitors on board and even offered free self-service coffee and cheesecake. It was baby-friendly for our 1-year-old, and we had an amazing experience watching seals very close in their natural habitat."

How much do Phillip Island tours cost?

Phillip Island tours begin around US$12 for a self-guided audio experience of the island's coastal cliffs, while guided wildlife cruises typically range from US$85 to US$130 per person. Full-day tours that cover multiple activities, such as surfing and go-karting, can cost closer to US$300.

On the lower end, the Phillip Island Seal-Watching Cruise costs from US$85 per person and will take you out to Seal Rocks with live commentary, though it's only a 2-hour cruise and you'll be part of a much larger group. For something more premium, the Phillip Island Whale-Watching Tour costs around US$130 per person. It covers four hours on the water with morning tea and a guide on board to help spot humpback whales, dolphins, seals, and other marine life.

What activities are included on Phillip Island tours?

Phillip Island tours feature tons of activities across the island and out on the water. Depending on your interests, you can join a wildlife cruise to spot fur seals and dolphins, go whale-watching along the migration route, or catch the famous Penguin Parade at Summerland Beach. You can also relax on the beach or take a coastal walk along the cliffs of Cape Woolamai.

Consider an all-day or multi-day tour to pack in as many sights and activities as possible. The Phillip Island: Golden Hour Penguin Express Tour w/ Island Pickup takes you to explore the seaside village of Cowes, then on to the Nobbies Centre to scan for wallabies and Cape Barren geese, plus the fur seal colony at Seal Rocks. You'll then visit Summerland Beach, where you can watch the Penguin Parade—hundreds of little penguins waddling ashore at dusk—and learn about the conservation work that goes into protecting the colony.
