Yes, Kingscote is the largest town on Kangaroo Island, with plenty of accommodation, restaurants, and shops. A wide range of island tours are available from Kingscote, but even if you don’t stay in town, it’s worth visiting to get a taste of local life and learn about the island’s fascinating history.

Start by walking down to Reeves Point and then Hope Cottage Museum to admire the coastal views and learn about Kangaroo Island’s colonial history. Stop along the way to admire the Kingscote Silo Art, then head back to town to stroll along the jetty and visit the Kangaroo Island Art Gallery.

Most travelers arrive on Kangaroo Island at Penneshaw Ferry Terminal, from where it’s about a 45-minute drive along the B23 to Kingscote. Shuttle buses are available by reservation. Alternatively, Kingscote is also home to the only airport on Kangaroo Island with regular 30-minute flights to and from Adelaide.

Many tours only include a short stop in Kingscote to grab lunch or browse the shops, but you’ll need at least half a day to see the highlights. Alternatively, base yourself in the town for a night or two, so you can try the many restaurants and cafés.
