It could be amazing, but it’s a waste

In my opinion, it’s a tourist trap, but I think that, unfortunately, many of the experiences on offer are. It’s not easy to get a proper idea of what this sort of tour is like when you’re booking, so I’ll try to describe my experience as objectively as possible. First of all, we were indeed a small group (11 people) travelling in a minibus, so that’s a plus. The driver was really friendly and drove carefully. The first stop is at the side of the road and lasts 5 minutes, giving you a chance to take a few photos of the mountains. Then, we drive on to a cosmetics shop (the sort you find in abundance in the medina). It was fine, nothing special, and I wouldn’t have minded if it had lasted 15 minutes, but we spent a third of the trip there (they go through every single product, every fragrance variant… In short, it’s not particularly interesting). We set off again to go for lunch. All along the way I spot loads of little spots by the water that look charming and where I’d have loved to eat, but of course we stop at the most touristy and crowded place of all – no canvas shade sails or Moroccan rugs here, just plastic sheeting and concrete. Fortunately, the river is still pretty and we’ve got a good spot. The meal arrives and it’s truly THE big low point of the day. I’ve never eaten so badly in Morocco and yet it was one of the most expensive meals I’ve ever had. I ordered a couscous; the semolina was dry and crunchy, and the sauce had a sickening smell. I took two spoonfuls and left the rest. The same went for the dessert. I ate a bit of bread, but even the bread wasn’t good. It’s a real scandal because the whole point of the day was to go and eat by the river, and it turned out to be the worst part. Afterwards, we set off with the guide (who was very good) on a walk leading to a waterfall. There were loads of people; all along the path there were stalls selling the same items as in the souk. Unfortunately, we hardly ever take the time to enjoy the scenery (which is magnificent, by the way); instead, we stop at the shops where they once again show you what’s for sale. Such a shame. The experience could have been incredible, the setting is superb, the driver and the guide were great, but all I’m left with is: meh…
