I did a full-day tour with Amigo Tours today, visiting a cenote, a colonial town, and Chichen Itza, and overall I really enjoyed the experience — even though it was a very long day!
We started at the cenote. We spent around 20–30 minutes with Paul, who explained the layout of the site, shared some interesting insights about Mayan culture, and gave us time to look around the gift shop. After that, we were free to swim and enjoy the cenote at our own pace, which was lovely. Locker and Life vest are 200 Pesos.
Lunch was a good buffet and at the end we had a small tequila tasting, which was okay — not the highlight for me, but still a nice addition.
We then stopped at a nearby town which looked very pretty. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily, so most people stayed on the bus.
After that, we headed to Chichen Itza, where we had about an hour-long guided tour. Kevin explained the main central areas and key points of the site very clearly and after that we had another hour to explore alone.
Be aware that the archaeological site is surrounded by many souvenir sellers, so if you're planning to shop, make sure you bring some cash.
One important tip: the entrance fee to Chichen Itza is 697 MXN. The day before the tour, we were sent a link to pay 44 USD for entry.
With the exchange rate, it would have been cheaper to pay directly at the entrance in pesos. If I had known, I would have done that instead.
A big thank you to Kevin, Ricardo, and Paul for the day. They were caring, funny, and shared lots of information about Mayan culture.
Ricardo, our driver, made us feel very safe, and everything ran on time.
The only slightly stressful part was the pickup. I had requested hotel pickup, but instead I was asked to go to a bus stop about 15 minutes’ walk away. There were many buses there, and I didn’t know which one was mine. In the end, they did arrive on time with a big bus — so don’t worry, they will show up — but it would be helpful if they sent clearer information about how to identify the correct bus.
I had a really enjoyable day and would recommend the tour.

the guides were nice and kind but focused on sharing jokes and upselling rather than insights on Mayan civilisation, history, and present. overall, it was not a bad experience but expectations were higher. the schedule was tight and at some points felt a bit rushed.
Luidzy_G, May 2026
Our driver was Manuel and our tour guide was Pastor and they both were great! Pastor informed us of a bunch of great facts and Manuel drove us long distances.
Travis_C, May 2026
The tour was good overall. The guides Omar and Pastor were stellar. They were friendly, funny, and kind throughout the trip. They also explained the reason behind Chichen Itza’s closure and went through the background of Ek Balam in detail with us.
My only critique is the pickup process. It was late and we weren’t kept up to date with its arrival. I even called the support number which was not helpful either.

The night before received this message:
You received the below message(s) from Amigo Tours:
Booking updated for May 26, 2026. Please review the below.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Chichen Itza archeological zone is currently closed by the INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia). Unfortunately, as an unforeseen circumstances unrelated to Amigotours operation, we see ourselves in the need to visit a different archeological zone instead.
Tomorrow's departure will be visiting the archeological zone of Ek Balam, located near Valladolid colonial town. This archeological zone features beautiful mayan scenery and architecture just like Chichen Itza, in which you'll be able to climb the pyramid to appreciate amazing views like the ancient Mayans.
Pay the local tax at Ek Balam in cash for 709 MXN per person at the ticket booths in the archeological zone. For Mexican citizens, 242 MXN per person, but must present either an INE, IFE, FM2, FM3, or passport, any of which must be current; if you do not bring one, you will have to pay the fee as foreign visitors, which is 709 MXN per person. All payments must be done in cash at the ticket booths for this archeological zone in Mexican pesos.

On the morning of the tour, we were waiting at our pick up location, the bus arrived and the guide came out to check our names against his list. Our names were not there and so he called someone and then informed us that we did not confirm that we were going to Ek Balam and that they had no space on the bus. To our outrage we showed him the message, asking where it said that we had to confirm. But he just said sorry and left. Us two were the only people at this pick up stop, so why did they even come to this pickup location in the first place if they did not have space on the bus? Why was there no communication saying that we had to confirm anything? We contacted customer service asking why this mishap had happened and why our seats were not accounted for but they were useless - saying things like “ Hello enjoy your tour!” or “ There is a current protest at the entrance of Chichen Itzá so nobody can acces” . The last message I received from them is “ We requested your confirmation yesterday so we could include you in the lists of Ek Balam.
Since you did not reply, the activity wasn´t confirmed and todau we no longer had room on rhe bus” to which I asked AGAIN, where did it say I had to confirm anything? My credit card was already charged, and the change to Ek Balam only happened a day before our tour and so how does a tour sell out that quickly to not have room for 2 people who were supposed to be on the trip since the very beginning. Totally ruined our day and still do not understand why we’re not able to attend. Nor do I understand what I was supposed to confirm. Horrible customer service experience.

Chichen Itza was closed for tourists due to local protests. As a result the tour operator pivoted to Ek Balam which is another great archeological site. I liked the resilience displayed however I am not happy that the tour operator was aware of the strikes and elected to hide this information from tourists.
It was underhanded and deceitful which is why I am rating this poorly. The tour guide was brilliant with information, knowledge base and mannerisms. The blame is only towards Amigo Tour company.
Norm_D, May 2026
The activities itself were nice, however, 2+ hours of the morning were spent picking up guests and another 3 hours at the end of the day were spent dropping off guests. In total, our day was 14 hours instead of the 12 hours advertised, and we missed our dinner reservation (got back to our resort at 10 PM).
Maribel_L, May 2026
Juam, Franck and Noe were really professionals. Chichen itza was closed and they took us to Ek Balam.
Lucy_G, May 2026
Be prepared for a long, hot day - but it is filled with history, one of a kind experiences and good food & drink. Our bus driver was Noe & he made sure we got to all the places on time & safely. Our guides were Frank & Audi - they know SO much history and are fantastic story tellers. We greatly enjoyed learning what they had to teach us and seeing the history for ourselves.
Jimmy_Z, May 2026
Extremely disappointing and misleading tour experience. I booked this tour specifically because the listing/homepage said it would visit Chichén Itzá. That was the main reason we chose and paid for this tour. However, we were not taken to Chichén Itzá at all. Instead, after the tour had already started and we were already in the bus on the way to the ruins, the guide told us we would be going to Ek Balam instead. This was never clearly disclosed before the tour began, and by that point we had no realistic option to leave or make other arrangements.
Ek Balam is much smaller than Chichén Itzá and, was a much worse experience compared with the world-famous site we actually booked this tour to visit. It is not an equivalent substitute for Chichén Itzá, and replacing the main advertised destination without clear advance notice is unacceptable.
The guide was also impatient and dismissive when we raised this concern, which made the experience even worse.
The pickup process was also very poorly handled. The message we received said pickup would be in the lobby, so we waited there for a long time. Later, we were told the guide/driver had been outside and had already left. Because of this miscommunication, we had to pay for a taxi to another location just to join the tour.
On top of that, the vehicle was very uncomfortable. Cancun/Yucatán is extremely hot, but the air conditioning in the vehicle was very weak and barely helped. We were stuck in the bus for four to five hours in uncomfortable heat.
No apology, compensation, refund, or meaningful solution was provided for any of these issues. Overall, this was a terrible experience: misleading itinerary, poor communication, bad service, and an uncomfortable vehicle. We booked this tour for Chichén Itzá and did not receive what was advertised. The ratings are very misleading if you don't read the bad reviews. I would not recommend this tour operator to anyone.
Dominique_G, May 2026
Despite switching Mayan ruin locations due to protesting, we very much enjoyed our time at Ek Balam. Our team Manuel, driver, and Pastor, our tour guide, did a fantastic job.
Just ensure you have the pesos to enter the ruins as they do not accept card or USD.
Luis_A, May 2026
The staff Was great.. very knowledgeable and friendly, however the fact that we were not able to visit or intended destination was a problem for me, hence the low review.. the place we go instead was nice but definitely smaller than Chichen itza.. I understand that it was not fall of their own but it was still a let down. The food was great… however the Cenote was not that great.. they have better choices like noool ha or Suyutun cenotes.. so something to think about when doing your booking.

Juam, the one and only, was the best tour guide for the job! He was so informative and funny and made sure we all had a great time! Kevin was also great and kept the tour organized and made sure we had enough time for each activity. I highly recommend this tour for any and everyone!

Well worth the trip from our pickup point.
It was an extremely hot day, so the bus with AC, and comfy seats were welcoming.
Our tour guide John was excited to share the history, origin, culture, and contribution of the first peoples.
The cenote was our first stop where we got to spend time hearing about the Mayan calendar, the healing properties of the native rock formations, and got to receive spiritual blessing from an elder.
The lunch was really good.
The cenote was breathtaking, but I need to warn had may steps with no railings to traverse down, then up.
From there, we had a stopover in Valladolid, which was a quaint little town rich in history, with a large cathedral to visit.
From this point on was the trip to what was the icing on the cake.
Unfortunately I did not get to see the main attraction as I was suffering what I believe after preparation to the opposite to be heat stroke.
I had to stay on a bench in the shade with my Gatorade while the tour continued.
John our guide made sure that security and other guide was checking in on me about every 15 minutes, offering to get medical.
I was doing ok in the shade.
Although I personally did not get to see, I feel that I still experienced through others pictures and stories.

Clear communication for pick coordinations, pick up was on time. The tour was very informative and Pastor our tour guide along with Manuel the drive did a great job in hosting us. They made sure the experience was informative. The bus was super clean, well maintained and we had a smooth ride. The only area for improvement is the lunch place, could have been better.
aaron_f, May 2026
The experience was totally awesome. First, I wanna say that my tour guide Pastor is THE MAN! Not only did he educate us on the Mayan history he made us laugh the whole time. The whole day was a total blast from climbing the stairs of Ek Balam to swimming in the Cenote’ the day was full of fun as well as educational from learning the Mayan culture to learning the different types of tequila lol. I will totally recommend this to all my friends. Also I wanna say thank you to Manuel. He was a great driver who got us there safely and got us home with no problem.
Reginald_G, May 2026
It was great seeing the ruins and learning the history. I wish we had more time to explore but it's a good starting point
Celeste_M, May 2026
We chose the 5am option as per the recommendations of other reviews saying it’s best to go early, and from our experience, it was definitely not needed and we wish we had chosen the 7am so we didn’t wake up at 4am. It was completely dead at Chichen Itza which was lovely and we were the first and only bus in the parking area. Also when we left around 11am we were also the only bus still weirdly.
I think it was a strange day as we also didn’t need to pay the taxes, so Amigo Tours were really good with refunding us the taxes that we pre-paid for, this totalled $88 for two people so not an insignificant amount and very glad to have been refunded without even asking.
As for the day trip itself, it was pleasant and well organised but we had a few issues with it being:
1. The coach seats were absolutely tiny - we’ve been travelling South America for 3.5 months and this was our last part of the trip in Mexico, and by far this was the worst coach we’d sat on. No room for legs and the head rest stuck out so far forward that my head was protruding forward like a tortoise.
2. Overselling - the tour felt like it was trying to sell to us the whole time with the obsidian (which isn’t even from the region), the Mayan Calendar, the market shop and finally the tips.
3. Agenda could be massively streamlined - we didn’t get breakfast despite the 4:50am pickup, and we couldn’t buy anything or eat anything till after Chichen itza, at the lunch place around 12pm! Also nowhere to buy water which is dangerous with the weather being 30 degrees and in the sun. Once we got to the lunch place FINALLY, we were starving and couldn’t wait but we were told we had to come to the Mayan purification ritual first, and then walk around the shop and THEN we could go for lunch.🥲
4. Lunch was decent, great variety of buffet but drinks were SO EXPENSIVE. We paid $18 for two small bottles of water and a mango smoothie.
5. Vallidolid - also felt very salesy. Had 30 mins here which was nice but I didn’t want to go into all the shops we parked right by as they seemed like tourist traps.
6. Explanations around Chichen Itza could’ve been improved. It was confusing and focussed a lot on the artwork on the temples but would’ve been interesting to hear more about their traditions, history, culture, world events, present day events etc.
On the other hand we absolutely loved the Cenote and seeing Chichen Itza so empty.
Charldeane_W, May 2026
Thank you Tomas, your passion and enthusiasm is infectious and we walked away learning so much and intending to keep learning about Mayan culture and history. This was a fantastic day and even though it was long we left feeling fulfilled. My partner wasn’t sure about this tour but on several occasions expressed how much he was enjoying it! Many thanks to Saul for getting us there and back safely and cool! Would 100% recommend this tour to anyone considering it
Andrew_H, May 2026
Absolutely incredible experience at Chichén Itzá thanks to Paul, Tomas, and Carlos! From start to finish, they made the entire tour unforgettable. Their knowledge, energy, professionalism, and passion for the history and culture truly brought everything to life.
Paul was an amazing guide and explained the history in such an interesting and easy-to-understand way. Tomas made sure everything ran smoothly and kept the group comfortable the entire time, and Carlos brought such a great vibe and positive energy to the experience.
You can tell they genuinely care about making sure everyone has a great time. The tour was organized perfectly, fun, informative, and honestly one of the highlights of our trip to Mexico. If you’re visiting Chichén Itzá, I highly recommend booking with them — you will not regret it. Thank you again, Paul, Tomas, and Carlos, for such an amazing day and memories we’ll never forget!

The tour was great! Juan (#1039) was a great tour guide very informative and fun! The buffet offered was a good option as well they had cochinito tacos! Everything was very organized.

Thank you Paul, Kevin and Enrique for this tour at Chichen Itza, Valladolid and Cenote. It was really amazing! We loved it! All the team was very professional and nice! Thank you for your guide's explanations and commentaries ! We recommend 100%!
Shishir_S, May 2026
We were travelling with our 1 year old. We loved the tour overall.
Few remarks. Our guide (John) was very friendly and funny. His storytelling is very interesting and made the journey very pleasing. He also helped us with our kid when it got very heated at the Chichen Itza temple.
Would recommend this tour but please check the temperature at Chichen itza before booking. It’s way hotter than the Resorts.
Elisa_D, May 2026
Chichen Itza in the mid-evening was a good experience with fewer people inside
Time frame for visits is good at Chichen Itza and Valladolid: could get 20 extra minutes at the cenote because of lunch time - we instead were guided and 'forced' to stay at the souvenir shop for 15 mins instead of moving forward to the main point of interest
The cenote is a nice one but rather small
Alexa_B, May 2026
The tour guide did not explain the history of the chitchen iza only the spiritual meaning and how we should be blessed that we have worked hard to be able to see it. The other 2 stops did not seem necessary either.
Response from Host, May 2026
Dear Traveler, thank you for your feedback. We regret your impression of the explanations and itinerary. Our guides are trained to provide structured information and cultural context, and your comments will be reviewed internally to ensure consistency across all tours. This is a bit of a long, hot day, but worth every second! The tour guides were absolutely incredible. Giving us so much history about the areas, and having everything organized perfectly
Leta_P, May 2026
This was a great experience! I went by myself and felt safe the entire time! The guides Franck and Tomas and the driver Abram were absolutely awesome! They were very knowledgeable and spoke both English and Spanish!! It is an all day excursion but I had a great time!! I would highly recommend this experience!! My advice would be to take water shoes for swimming in the cenote because walking down all the steps which half are stone and the other half wooden may hurt your feet!!
Jackson_E, May 2026
Overall a great experience. Manuel, Juam, and Jose were amazing tour guides; those guys all deserve raises. The tour was very organized, and there was plenty of time to do all the activities involved. If you’re looking for a day trip while in Cancun, this one is top notch.
trevaughn_t, May 2026
My wife and I had a great time on this tour, it was our first tour ever like this in Mexico so we didn’t not know what to expect. Our tour guide Frank did a great job with so much information about the Mayan culture and just keeping us entertained along the way during this long trip! Thomas was great in making sure all of us were accounted for, safe and also gave a great tour at the Chichen Itza! Can’t forget our driver Abram who picked us up, and got us to all of our destinations safe even in torrential downpour! Hats off to this amazing crew for a fabulous experience!
