The Best Whale Shark Experience in Holbox – Professional, Safe & Unforgettable
I’m not usually someone who writes reviews, but this experience was so exceptional that I couldn’t not write one.
I booked the whale shark snorkeling tour through Viator with VIP Holbox only one day in advance, and everything was perfect from the very beginning. I received a confirmation on WhatsApp with clear information, guidelines, and everything I needed to know for the following day.
When we arrived in the morning, we were welcomed with an amazing breakfast — fresh fruit, pastries, coffee, and more. They even had mosquito repellent available for us. I had taken other tours on the island, and the level of care and attention here was genuinely on another level.
We sat down for breakfast together and met our guide, Edier (who kindly let us call him Eddie 😊). He was incredible. He explained everything clearly, answered every question in English, and made sure everyone understood what was happening throughout the day. If you’ve traveled around the island, you probably know that an “English tour” doesn’t always mean everything will actually be explained in English, so this made a huge difference.
More importantly, you could tell that Eddie genuinely cared. He wanted us to have an amazing experience, but he was equally serious about keeping us safe and respecting and protecting the animals.
Then came the actual tour. We found a group of whale sharks and got into the water in turns, with Eddie swimming alongside us and guiding us. It was absolutely surreal.
This was also where you could really see the difference in professionalism between VIP Holbox and some of the other groups around us. We saw other boats putting many people into the water at the same time, which felt chaotic and potentially unsafe for both the swimmers and the animals. With VIP Holbox, everything was controlled and organized: only two of us entered the water at a time, and the next pair waited until they were back on the boat before entering.
It might sound like a small detail, but when you’re actually there in the water with these incredible animals, it makes a huge difference. I felt safe the entire time, and it was clear that respecting the whale sharks was a real priority rather than just something they said in the briefing.
Another detail I really appreciated was that Eddie brought his own GoPro into the water and filmed videos of us swimming with the whale sharks. At the end, we had the option to purchase the footage for a very reasonable price. This was amazing for me because I didn’t have an underwater camera, so I could just enjoy the experience and still come home with incredible videos from it.
Our captain was fantastic as well, and the whole boat ride felt smooth and well managed. At one point, a couple in our group didn’t get a great view of the whale shark during their turn, so the team actually let them go in again to make sure they got the experience. That small gesture says a lot about how much they genuinely care about everyone having a great day.
Afterward, we saw flamingos, had delicious ceviche, and eventually made our way back.
I’m traveling solo, and I also came away from this experience having met wonderful people and made new friends, which made an already incredible day even more special.
From beginning to end, this was thoughtful, professional, warm, and genuinely unforgettable. If you’re considering a whale shark tour in Holbox, I cannot recommend VIP Holbox — and especially Eddie and the crew — enough.
Truly one of the highlights of my trip to Mexico. 🐋🤍

Our experience with Diego...
Our experience with Diego our guide was amazing. He speaks French/English/Spanish very well (we are French) and is very kind !
He gave us lots of informations about the island and the animals we were seeing.
We saw flamants rose, raies, hérons, crocodiles. He came pick us at the hotel and drop us back.
We were a bit afraid about mosquitos (morning tour) and none, even in the mangrove so it was perfect !
We fully recommand this experience !!

Highly recommend!
Breathtaking! Completely unique and unforgettable. Enrique led our tour and taught us about bioluminescence, then pointed out constellations. It was a small group and an easy kayak ride. The stars were amazing and the bioluminescent bay was incredible. Highly recommend!

Unique and memorable experience!
Had a great time seeing the bioluminescent plankton in Holbox. Alex was so kind, knowledgeable and prepared - timing everything perfectly and providing all of the gear (which was really nice quality). He shared lots of information about the plankton and the stars/constellations and even captured some great photos and videos that he shared with us after.

A great experience
We had a wonderful time on the Three Islands Tour. Communication with the tour company was excellent and our guide, Johnny, was very friendly and informative. There were only 6 people on the tour including ourselves, which was nice. We visited all three locations as advertised and even saw several groups of dolphins fairly close to the boat along the way. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Fabulous kayak adventure in Holbox!
Excellent tour! We decided to go on the 6 am sunrise one and it was fantastic! Ivan our guide clearly loves what he does He had so many incredible facts about the animals and marvelled in the flock of Flamingos alongside us. So many birds and several crocs. Even my teenagers loved this! Highly recommend!

Fantastic
Our guides (Enrique and Ivan) contacted us via WhatsApp before pickup. They picked us up from the hotel right on time, and we drove to the beach with three other guests. There, we received our equipment and were able to store our belongings in a locker free of charge. We then received a briefing on kayaking, as it was our first time kayaking.
From there, we set off across the sea, which was a bit tricky at first, but our guides waited for us and helped us all the way to the mangroves. Along the way, we even saw our first small crocodile and were able to take some fantastic photos of the sunrise. In the mangroves, our guides explained the flora and fauna in detail. They pointed out every animal we encountered and explained something about each one. Midway through the tour, we were treated to drinks and snacks. Unfortunately, we only saw a single flamingo, but it was a beautiful sight.
The marine life was also explained to us.
Our guides waited patiently for us, and we felt very well taken care of. There was plenty of time for photos and videos during the tour.
A fantastic tour, highly recommended. However, it's really strenuous for beginners.

Lovely evening in early March
Not quite the time of year, but we did see some bioluminescence. Our tour guide was great, and we had a wonderful evening with a clear sky to see the stars. We went to a private beach, so there were not many people, and they took a photo of us under the stars. Hotel pickup was extra nice. Would recommend!

A memorable experience
The tour was splendid and everything we hoped for. Our guide David Ricardo and our captain were very knowledgeable about the island and its history. On our way to Yalahau in the morning, we were fortunate to encounter a pod of dolphins, it was quite incredible. We ended our tour with punta mosquito as our last stop, which was so relaxing and then were dropped off in town. Highly recommend booking this tour!

Amazing trip
Absolutely incredible trip, a true 10/10. Billy was an outstanding guide, so friendly and knowledgeable, and the scenery was beyond beautiful. From peaceful birdwatching to pristine sandbanks and breathtaking nature, every moment felt special. One of the highlights of our time in Holbox, an absolute must-do.

This fishing trip is...
This fishing trip is super fun! The boat trip to the fishing spot took about 1 hour, and we caught a lot of fish.
Water was not toongood for snorkeling so we skipped that part and went streight to the Cabo Catoche beach to make the Ceviche for lunch.
The team was very nice and helpful.
I took my 10 year old son with me and he had a lot of fun catching the fish.

Our best experience in Holbox
Fantastic experience with our guide David who was incredibly knowledgeable about both the sea life and the stars (the latter of which is greatly undersold!). Even though the conditions were only about 40%, the bioluminescence was still very prominent once you got away from the light of the town so don’t be put off if you can’t see it as soon as the sun sets

On Isla Holbox, life slows down—with no bridge to the mainland, the pace here is a world away from the spring breakers of Cancun and the arty hedonism of Tulum. But if you get tired of lounging, Isla Holbox tours can supplement your vacation with some exploration. Visit bioluminescent waters, mangrove forests, and remote islands such as Isla de los Pájaros in a kayak. The nearby waters even count gargantuan whale sharks among their residents.
