Additional Info

  • Confirmation will be received at time of booking
  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Service animals allowed
  • Not recommended for travelers with back problems
  • Not recommended for pregnant travelers
  • No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
  • Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level
  • The owner of the service animal must provide a Licensed Life-vest by the Coast Guard for the animal. The animal must be in total control all the time. Keep in mind that there will be many people around in the dark.
  • Minimum age 6 years
  • Guest under 18 yrs of age must be accompanied by an adult
  • For safety reasons pregnant women cannot participate. (NO exclusions)
  • Kayaks have a weight limit of 240 lbs. per person. (NO exclusions) To assure weight restriction is met, guests will be weighed on-site. Even if Viator system allows to write other weight, the weight limit will still apply.
  • If necessary, a tarp (canopy) may be used during the excursion to block any light pollution and enhanced the experience.
  • Our kayaks are all tandem kayaks for two people - you are booking per person not per kayak.
  • Guest that are not able to complete the tour for any reason will not be provided a refund of any type.
  • All guests must be able to row their kayaks by themselves. One of the requirements is that you are able to get in and out of the kayak on your own and be able to maneuver it. If you are an unexperienced kayaker we highly suggest you choose the earlier tour.
  • If one space is left, that means there is 1 space (for 1 person) on a tandem kayak (No single kayaks available). You will be accompanied by another guest on the tour.
  • All guests must arrive 30 mins before the start of the tour. The drive from San Juan can be about an hour and 20-30 mins depending on traffic. Please plan accordingly
  • Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way. When crowded conditions warrant, Pure Adventure will provide extra guides for your safety.
  • Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary from minimal no very bright suddenly.
  • In order to best appreciate the bioluminescent phenomena our tours run at sunset and early evening and it can get quite dark in the mangrove canal. So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills
  • Our offices are closed on SUNDAYS - Reservations made Saturday after 5 pm will not be revised until Monday at 9 am. For cancellations request during this time please send us a message through Viator.
  • SPECIAL NOTE: We encourage our guests to not reserve the tour on the same day of arrival to the Island. If the FLIGHT or FERRY is delayed and the guest misses the tour the guest will not be entitled to a refund or rescheduling.
  • TOUR TIME might change depending on sunset time. If so we will send a reminder for updated meeting time.
  • This tour takes place in the water. Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. We recommend to bring a change of clothes and towel for after the trip.
  • Tour is not canceled in rainy days. We will get wet anyways ;)
  • It is the guest responsibility to read and comply with health and weight requirements. Ignorance of the requirements is not accepted as an excuse.
  • There are public bathrooms on-site, but they are not always in good condition. You may consider stopping in fast food before getting to the meeting site or using the bathrooms from the nearby stores/restaurants which are sometimes available.
  • Certain time of the year great amounts of sargassum (seaweed) arrive to our coasts. This can make paddling to feel like a workout. Also the natural decomposition odor might be unpleasant.
  • No Expecting Mothers
  • For safety reasons, children under 6 years old CANNOT participate in PURE ADVENTURE tour.
  • Those who have epilepsy, back problems, claustrophobia, heart conditions, dizziness, recent surgery or any other condition that may put life in risk are not allowed to participate in PURE ADVENTURE tour.
  • Kayaks have a weight limit of 240 lbs. per person. (NO exclusions) To assure weight restriction is met, guests will be weighed on-site.
  • Even if Viator system allows the guest to write weight over the limit, it will still be 240 lbs the weight limit.
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 30 travelers

Better than we could have asked for!

Samantha_C, May 2026
This was an awesome experience! We are a group girls looking to have a good experience and we had just that! Javier gave a good introduction with some humor sprinkled in! Eli gave an amazing explanation of the bioluminescence and of the astronomy in the sky! The bioluminescence was not very bright and they gave us a message before hand that was the case due to it being a natural phenomenon. They brought a tarp so we could still see some of the sparks of it and really helped to give us the experience! They also offered snacks and drinks at the end!! Javier offered to take some photos of us at sunset and he put his full effort into it!! We couldn’t be happier with our experience!

Beautiful evening

Juliana_A, Apr 2026
It was a beautiful, peaceful evening. Fun to experience the dusk and dark in a kayak. The bioluminescence was minimal but we were glad to be able to see a little biit of it.

Matt_K, Apr 2026
Very cool experience, especially for our kids. We went at the early time and they had to use a tarp to really make the color pop, but we could see it without on our way back. Experienced differ every night, but it was not the large pool of blue like in the pictures and was more like flakes of color popping in the water. It was still really cool, but temper your expectations. The staff was awesome, did a great job helping those that needed it, and were educational about what we were seeing along the way. Listening to their instructions makes it clear they have seen some s*** over the years from guests, rather humorous! There are a lot of tour companies that do this tour, but they were the first on the water and our to the site so you had extra time to acclimate and hang out, which was a plus. There are restaurants in the same spot as the tour, so grab a bite before or after, it was great.

We really enjoyed this...

Kat_S, Apr 2026
We really enjoyed this tour. We were part of a 6pm group and i highly recommend it. It was nice to go out when it was still light out, see the lagoon and different land marks before witnessing the bioluminescence and leave in the dark to see how different the animal life is after dark. It really came to life with animal sounds, glowing bugs, jumping Snook fish etc. Javier was fun to talk too and full of info. This company really did seem to stand out from the rest. They kept all lights (even the little glow stick type ones to tell groups apart) off until we saw the bioluminescence. We were the first group out. They pointed out stars and planets in the sky while waiting for nightfall. It was a really great experience.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Not recommended

Iva_P, Apr 2026
This was a really disappointing experience. We booked this tour expecting to see the bioluminescent effect, which is the whole point—but it lasted literally about 2 minutes. The rest of the time was spent kayaking through a very rough river, in complete darkness, and it felt chaotic rather than enjoyable or safe. The conditions made it even worse—kayaks are already in the water, so you have to walk in and sit down wet from the start, and then stay wet and uncomfortable for the entire two hours. Overall, it was stressful, poorly executed, and absolutely not worth the time or money. I would not recommend this experience.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Hello Iva_P, Thank you for your feedback. We can assure you that the time spent at the lagoon is not 2 minutes. The detailed description of the adventure is on the website as well as in any of the third party vendors. It explicitly states what to expect which includes the passage through the mangroves and the variability on brightness since it is a natural phenomenon out of our control. In any activity involving water, the likelihood of getting wet or being wet the whole time is extremely high. After all, this is kayaking adventure! Thank you again for your feedback. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Really was best tour

PATTY_J, Apr 2026
Organized, courteous and really great experience. Don't bother them until 5:30pm when Catalina can actually put on a smile for you. Lots of light pollution but Pure Adventures found a way around it so that we got to see the bioluminescent creatures albeight briefly. Kayaking through the mangrove forest was spectacular and opening into the bay was amazing! Thank you to all the guides. Bring soap or wet wipes for community bathroom. And towels for after the wet excursion for those that cannot read the fine print. Food for purchase available on site for after in the square. Pure Adventures provided cold water and chips and lollipop for after.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Jackie_R, Mar 2026
We really didn’t get to see much luminescence unfortunately other than under the tarp. We still had a great time despite that! Javier was on his second day as a tour guide and he did an awesome job helping my daughter and I who were struggling a bit. He was so patient and even gave my daughter a flower!

Fun experience!

Bathing suit not necessary, but wear athletic clothes that can get wet. Wear shoes that you can slip off easilly To walk to kayak in water

Navigating in the dark is...

Cindy_G, Mar 2026
Navigating in the dark is a bit challenging. Guides assist but did leave someone behind. We took the earlier shift; I suspect later has a more dramatic impact with full darkness—you need to swish your hands in the water between kayaks to see bioluminescence.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hi Cindy_G, Thank you for your feedback. As you mentioned, kayaking in the dark is challenging. However, our priority is the safety of our guests. The last person in the group line is a guide. So, rest assure that whoever stayed behind was with one of the guides. The pyrodinium bahamense is the organism that shows bioluminescence. Movement is what activates the luminescence, which is why we agitate the water with our hands and why it can be seen when rowing. The brightness may be affected by multiple factors. While light pollution is one of them, other factors such as weather and sea conditions, among others impact it. Because of this, it is an unpredictable phenomenon. We’ve had full moon nights with high brightness and no moon nights with low brightness. Thank you again for your feedback. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Great tour

Friendly guides. Fun time. Very informative when u asked questions. Would recommended to anyone as ling as u can kayak against a slight current.

Disappointing

Heather_A, Feb 2026
While we did see bioluminescence we only had about 5 minutes to look at it before having to head back. The ratio of time with the luminescence to the amount of time spent kayaking/just sitting in the lagoon was not worth the cost. On top of that, a group of 20 teenagers on a field trip were included in our tour. They were loud and engaging in tons of horseplay. No one did anything to reign in their behavior or noise level which ruined the experience for us. Overall, incredibly disappointing and I wish we'd gone with one of the other companies on the lagoon that night, all of which were well-behaved and quiet and spent more time on the water than we did.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Hello Heather_A, Thank you for your feedback. We would like to clarify that all companies in the area have a tour that last the same amount of time. In fact, we are one of the companies that give more time at the lagoon. It is important to note that the bioluminescence can be seen all the time and that the time we use the tarp is not the only time to see it. The tarp is to enhance the experience. Everyone is welcomed in our trip. Sadly, we can’t control what people do. It is actually interesting when we try to control actions for the benefit of everyone but people complain about it. There is no way of pleasing everyone. Thank you again for your feedback. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Had fun!

Anna_C, Feb 2026
It's a workout but it was beautiful. Very little bioluminescent activity but still a worthwhile event.

Great tour!

Michael_R, Jan 2026
It helps to know how to kayak, especially in a tandem kayak before going on this tour. Expect to kayak back with only moonlight and the darker the moon the better the bioluminescence will be.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Hi Michael_R, Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with us! This is truly a very adventurous night time trip, and although not required, some experience kayaking will always help to navigate in the darkness. Thanks again for your feedback. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Jennifer_C, Nov 2025
Slightly disappointed. To many people on the tour. It would have been a better experience if they separated based on experience level. I have been kayaking for years and spent the entire time avoiding being ran into by couples that could not control their kayaks.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Hello Jennifer_C, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that our tour did not meet your expectations. This is tour for everyone even with different levels of kayaking. Our guides are more than willing to help everyone in our tour. However, it is difficult to have groups separated by experience level because everyone deserves our attention, and we need to follow the safety guidelines established by both our company and certifying agencies. Thank you again for your feedback. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Wear long pants and long sleeve shirt like a rash guard. You will get wet and there are mosquitos. At the time we went there was no glow, but we were given an option to cancel or to receive some credit off the price we paid. We chose to still go and enjoyed the experience.

Eli, David and Michael were fantastic guides who kept everyone safe and provided interesting facts and information, Which made the kayaking adventure a ton of fun. Some info: you will get wet, wear water shoes, bring bug spray and the kayaks are for two people. My daughter, 11 was able to master the kayak in no time and my son, 8 rode in the front with my husband.

Katharine_J, Apr 2025
A 6pm departure time was perfect because we were also able to enjoy the sunset as we headed out to the lagoon on our kayaks (which was a good arm workout!). The bioluminescence wasn’t super visible on our night due to cloud cover reflecting back light from the city, but the guides brought tarps to help darken the water so we could still see some of it. Even if we hadn’t seen any bioluminescence, it still would’ve been a worthwhile outing. Our guides Javier, Yadriel, Adrian, and amaury were super friendly and personable and did a good job orienting us and helping us feel safe.
