Geothermal hike!
Great hike with a lot to see along the way! The inferno lake was the best! Lots of birds along the way as well. Highly recommend!

The walk is not as...
The walk is not as strenuous as much of the published information suggests. That said it’s better undertaken by strong walkers only and be prepared for poor weather!

Great trip
Robert was a great guide and explained all of the geothermal activities in an interesting way. The valley itself was beautiful and the lake trip was fun. We even stopped at a kiwi farm.

Very authentic, beautiful view of nature
Self-guided, a good long walk, but not overly challenging, with stopping points and benches for rest along the way. Very natural, no gimmicks, not commercial at all.

Unique Experience !!!
Our excursion guide was excellent, staying with us the entire time we hiked the long beautiful trail along the geothermal river to the lake and the boat tour around the lake.

A Stunning, Family-Friendly Geothermal Adventure
We had a fantastic experience exploring Waimangu as a group with little ones. We managed the first section comfortably with a small wheeled stroller—no need for a mountain buggy—which made things much easier than expected.
You get to see about 80% of the key sights in the first part of the walk, so it already feels very worthwhile even if you don’t go further. There are two additional paths, but we chose not to take the younger kids along for those since the second path involves quite a lot of stairs going up and down.
That said, the rest of my family (with the older kids) completed the 2nd and 3rd sections and said it was the most beautiful hike they’ve ever done—high praise! We all met up again after taking the bus to the 3rd stop, which gave us access to the lake view… absolutely magnificent and not to be missed.
The self-guided app was also a standout feature. It really brought the landscape to life—pointing out things like feeling the heat radiating from the mountainside and clearly explaining the geothermal activity (bubbling pools, steam vents, geysers). It added a lot of depth to the experience.
Highly recommend this walk for families and nature lovers alike. Whether you do a short stroll or the full hike, it’s an unforgettable place that truly showcases the raw beauty of New Zealand’s geothermal landscape.

The Yellowstone Of New Zealand
Robert was awesome! He was super informative & happy to answer all of our questions.
The experience was super cool from the kiwi farm to the Yellowstone of New Zealand and the boat ride topped it all off. This was one of my fav excursions we did while visiting New Zealand! 10/10 would recommend

As a family, we voted...
As a family, we voted this walk in our top three experiences. Excellent and friendly customer service, facilities at good spots and the walk itself was excellent as it had a bit of everything. From forest and wetlands to lakes and geothermal. We were caught in the rain the final 20 minutes and it was so nice to have the bus arrive on time and head back to the centre to dry off and have a quick lunch before departing. Kids loved it.

Tauranga: 5 star tour and guide
We enjoyed a fabulous day with Robert who picked us up from the Cruise port. Very convenient and stress-free! He took his time to show us all the sights around Tauranga before starting us on the drive to the geothermal Valley. As a retired school, principal, Robert made the hike through the Geothermal Valley most interesting with knowledgeable insights about the region’s geological features, flora, and birds. He made many stops to allow us to take photographs of the landscape. The boat ride on the lake was the cherry on the day’s tour: the captain took us right up to the boiling furmoroles. We had great pictures!
