Classic and contemporary architecture meet in Plaça de Catalunya, hailed as the beating heart of Barcelona. Surrounded by luxury hotels and high-end restaurants, the square also features sculptures and a grand fountain. Plus, the attraction-packed avenues of La Rambla and Passeig de Gracia converge here, making it the ideal starting point for sightseeing excursions.

St. James Square (Plaça de Sant Jaume) has been the civic and political center of Barcelona for centuries, since it was the forum in the Roman city of Barcino. This large square in the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) is a popular local gathering spot and home to the Palau de la Generalitat (Parliament of Catalonia), with its rose-pink Renaissance facade, and the medieval Barcelona City Hall (Casa de la Ciutat).

La Boqueria Market (Mercat de la Boqueria) is Barcelona’s busiest food market, with a massive building along La Rambla. More than 200 stalls, some of which have been around since its opening in 1840, range from family produce vendors to full-fledged restaurants. Whether you’re sourcing ingredients for the perfect paella or tracking down the best slice of Iberico ham in town, few experiences are as quintessentially Barcelona as shopping and dining at La Boqueria.

Sunny days draw crowds to this swath of golden sand stretching more than 0.7 miles (1.1 kilometers) along the traditional fishing neighborhood it’s named for. Laid-back beach bars—known as chiringuitos—serve seafood paella, tapas, and chilled drinks to diners at open-air tables. All summer long, locals and tourists alike stroll the adjacent promenade and soak up ample Mediterranean rays from loungers.

One of Barcelona’s most impressive architectural feats, the Palace of Catalan Music (Palau de la Música Catalana) is renowned for its spectacularly ornate interiors. In fact, its design is so impressive that it’s one of the few concert halls in the world to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1908 by Catalan art nouveau architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the venue hosts a range of traditional Catalan folk music performances.

A perch atop Montjuïc Mountain gives this centuries-old military fortress sweeping views across the city of Barcelona—from the port to the Mediterranean and even the neighboring Baix Llobregat region. Within the fortress walls, visitors find a parade ground, watch tower, and other military installations, as well as temporary and permanent exhibitions about local history. Also on-site is the Montjuïc Interpretive Center to tell the story of the fortress itself.

Overlooking southwest Barcelona, Montjuic Park (Parc de Montjuïc) is the city’s green hilltop getaway—complete with a cable car. It’s packed with attractions, including a historic cemetery, 17th-century Montjuïc Castle (Castell de Montjuïc) with panoramic views, National Art Museum of Catalonia (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) featuring Catalan art from medieval times to the 20th century, Joan Miró Museum (Fundació Joan Miró) with its vast collection, and replica Spanish Village (Poble Espanyol) where you'll find artisan-made souvenirs.

Cast your gaze upwards as you reach the southern end of La Rambla, Barcelona’s central boulevard, and you’ll see one of the city’s most prominent landmarks—the Columbus Monument. The slender Corinthian-style column stands 197 feet (60 meters) tall, capped with a statue of Christopher Columbus pointing out to sea. Step inside the structure and take the elevator to the top for panoramic views over Barcelona’s seafront.

Housed in the classically styled 1920s Montjuïc National Palace, the National Art Museum of Catalonia (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) occupies a spectacular location on Montjüic hill. Its collection features more than 350,000 works (of which around 3,200 are on display), spanning Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, and modern art, including pieces by Gaudí, Velázquez, and Titian.

With its imposing brick façade, 177-foot (54-meter) bell tower, and magnificent rose window—inspired by Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral—the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi is one of the most notable landmarks of the Gothic Quarter. Built in the 1300s, it’s one of Barcelona’s oldest churches and remains an important center of worship as well as a striking example of Catalan Gothic style.

One of Europe’s largest and busiest cruise ports, Barcelona welcomes more than 2.5 million cruise passengers each year to its docks at the foot of Las Ramblas. The Catalan capital makes a popular stop and starting point for Mediterranean cruises, including liners operated by Princess, Carnival, Celebrity, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Costa.

One of Barcelona’s most iconic public squares, Plaça d'Espanya sits at the foot of famed Montjuïc hill. Both a historic site and a major traffic hub, the plaza was designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for Barcelona’s International Exhibition in 1929. Plaça d'Espanya is anchored by an impressive fountain in its center that depicts Spain’s rivers and seas. Those headed to Montjuïc hill will inevitably pass through this bustling center.

Located just moments from the bustle of Las Ramblas, Güell Palace—also known as Palau Güell—is one of Antoni Gaudí’s earliest masterpieces. Designed as a private residence for wealthy industrialist Eusebi Güell, it showcases a darker, more experimental take on Gaudí’s signature style. Inside, visitors can discover surreal chimneys, stained glass, and ingenious plays of light and space. It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see for architecture lovers.

A huge former hospital complex, Sant Pau Recinte Modernista (Hospital de Sant Pau) is now a must-visit Barcelona cultural center and museum, particularly if you like architecture. Located in the central Eixample district, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is recognizable for its red bricks, colored tiles, stained glass, and whimsical design. Alongside Gaudí’s works, it’s one of the best examples of the city’s Catalan modernism architectural style.

Cobblestoned and tree-shaded Placa de Sant Felip Neri is a glimpse into the history of Barcelona’s atmospheric Gothic Quarter. The baroque church of Sant Felip Neri keeps watch from one side of the square—look for scars from a 1938 bombing raid of the city, and a small plaque commemorating it. Alongside the church are buildings that once housed the guilds of coppersmiths and cobblers.

One of Barcelona’s most dazzling attractions, the Magic Fountain (Font Màgica) was built in 1929 for the city’s World Exhibition. Today, you can watch the fountain’s spectacular illumination displays, which feature music and a kaleidoscope of shimmering lights, all set against the majestic backdrop of Montjuic Castle (Castell de Montjuïc)—a 17th-century fortress perched atop a mountain overlooking the Catalan capital.

Home to thousands of works by the incomparable Pablo Picasso, the Picasso Museum (Museu Picasso) sheds light on the Spanish artist’s creative evolution. Housed in five adjoining Gothic palaces in the El Born district, the collection traces Picasso’s career from his early childhood sketches to works from his Blue Period and Las Meninas series. It also sheds light on Picasso’s ties to Barcelona, where he spent many of his formative years.

One of Barcelona’s key athletic venues, the Olympic Stadium was constructed in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exposition. However, it is best known for its starring role in the 1992 Summer Olympics, which helped to transform the city into the thriving metropolis it is today. Today, the stadium hosts concerts and European soccer matches; if you’re a football fan, hearing the roar of the crowd in this historic venue is a must.

Framed by the wave-inspired walkway of the Rambla de Mar, the striking mirrored frontage of Maremagnum mall is one of the main attractions of Barcelona’s Port Vell (Old Port). A popular choice for shoppers and foodies alike, the shopping center houses the Time Out Market, alongside more than 40 local and international stores selling fashion, sportswear, homewares, electronics, and more.

Football (soccer) fans won’t want to miss Spotify Camp Nou stadium, home turf for Football Club Barcelona—and the legacy of Lionel Messi. It’s the largest stadium in Europe, with 99,354 seats. Barcelona’s Passeig De Gràcia is home to some of the city’s most impressive feats of architecture, but none are as emblematic of Catalan modernism as the Casa Amatller. Built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for renowned chocolatier Antoni Amatller, the 19th-century structure blends Flemish and Catalan styles to impressive effect. Now a period museum, it’s filled with original furnishings, photographs, and architectural drawings.

Spain’s oldest theme park, the enchanting Tibidabo Amusement Park (Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo) has been a Barcelona staple for more than a century. Overlooking the city from the 1,680-foot (512-meter) Mt. Tibidabo, the park is celebrated for its family-friendly attractions, panoramic views, and rides that range from renovated historic pieces to high-speed rollercoasters sure to appeal to thrill seekers.

Within Montjuic Park (Parc de Montjuïc), the Joan Miró Museum (Fundació Joan Miró) showcases paintings, drawings, sculptures, and stage designs by one of Barcelona's most famous 20th-century artists. It boasts more than 10,000 works of art by the revered creator, and the gallery itself is a piece of modern art—terraces and interior courtyards are designed to direct the flow of visitors and give the space an open-air feel.

Built as an indoor market in 1876, this iron-and-glass structure was a marketplace for almost a century before renovations in 2001 uncovered archaeological remains that had been buried after the 1714 siege. The site reopened in 2013 as El Born Center for Culture and Memory (El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria) to preserve and showcase the archaeological site, and also hosts exhibitions and workshops.

Opened to the public as a museum for the first time in 2017, Casa Vicens is Antoni Gaudi’s original modernist masterpiece and the first house he ever designed. Built in Barcelona in the 1880s for Manuel Vicens i Montaner, this UNESCO World Heritage Site sets the tone for the rest of Gaudi’s distinctive architecture, featuring characteristic vibrant flourishes and naturalistic ornamentation.

Situated just west of Las Ramblas, El Raval has transformed in the last couple of decades. This now-gentrified neighborhood is one of the hippest in Barcelona, teeming with boutiques, art galleries, bars, art museums, and restaurants, all with a multicultural influence. One highlight is the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), whose 3,000-strong permanent collection features work from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Emphasizing biodiversity and conservation research, the Barcelona Zoo is home to some 2,000 animals across more than 300 different species, and even more types of plant life. Look out for mammals, birds, and reptiles from different parts of the globe, all in living areas that mimic their natural habitats.

Barcelona’s La Monumental Bullring (Plaza de Toros Monumental de Barcelona) was built with a flamboyant neo-Mudéjar and Byzantine facade, and embellished with Iberian blue-and-white tiles. The bullring was the largest in Barcelona and could seat 20,000, plus another 5,000 standing. After bullfighting was banned in 2012, the ring was repurposed as a bullfighting museum and concert venue and is now better known as La Monumental.

Barcelona’s rich seafaring traditions are on display at the city’s Maritime Museum of Barcelona (Museu Marítim). Located in the Barcelona Royal Shipyard at Port Vell, the cavernous, Gothic-style building holds centuries-old war and merchant ships, modern sports boats, and a collection of maps, weapons, and navigational tools. Another highlight of the permanent collection is the 14th-century Les Sorres X, which was discovered during construction work for the Olympics.

Locals and travelers alike flock to Santa Caterina Market (Mercat de Santa Caterina), which stands out amid the historic buildings of Barcelona’s La Ribera neighborhood with its wave-like mosaic roof. The colorful redesign was added more recently, but this is one of the city’s oldest covered markets, dating back to 1848 and brimming with fresh produce and delicious gourmet foods from around Spain.
