What are people saying about Hakone

A thoughtful, enjoyable day in Hakone despite the rain
We had an enjoyable day with our guide, Hiroki Morikawa (Hiro), even though the weather did not cooperate. Inclement weather shut down the cable car, ropeway, and pirate ship loop, so Hiro adjusted the plan to keep us indoors as much as possible, which was a good call. We visited the Okada Museum of Art, had a lovely lunch together, and then watched a fascinating demonstration of how Hakone's traditional yosegi puzzle boxes are made. Hiro guided us easily between stops by bus and the Hakone Tozan Railway. Despite our best efforts, we were pretty wet by the time we got back to our hotel! But given the circumstances no one could control, we had a good day, and Hiro made the most of it with his knowledge, flexibility, and good company. If you are visiting Hakone, we recommend requesting Hiroki Morikawa. We would happily book with him again.

Unforgettable private custom tour of Hakone with Ken.
There wasn't one thing Ken could have done that he didn't do. He was extremely attentive, professional, kind, and thoughtful from start to finish. Ken led from the front of the line but always waited patiently until the last person caught up, so no one ever felt rushed or left behind. When I mentioned I was interested in local crafts, he took us to a workshop and asked the artisan to give us a demonstration, which isn't something they usually do, and then translated everything into English. It was a highlight of our trip and something we never could have arranged on our own. If you're visiting Hakone, request Ken. He turned a great day into an unforgettable one

Visiting Hakone
Mei, our guide for the day was outstanding; he showed us all around the Hakone area and we got to know the public transportation well enough that we were able to negotiate it on our own the following day. Mei was very knowledgeable, friendly and we very much enjoyed spending the day with him. We covered a lot of ground, went on the rope way, and saw and learned a lot; overall we had a great day; it was one of the best days we had during our 3 week visit in Japan.

Just 2.5 Hours, but So Much to Discover Within
Between fulfilling my roles at home and at work every day, I’d started to feel like I wasn’t quite making eye contact with the person looking back at me in the mirror. I couldn’t really explain it, but I felt like I needed to step away from my everyday routine, spend some time in nature, and reconnect with myself. That’s when I came across this tour and decided to give it a try. And my hunch was right and I had a great time! Although the tour is only 2.5 hours long, I really appreciated how thoughtfully it was structured. We started by introducing ourselves and sharing what brought us there, followed by some gentle yoga and meditation to quiet our minds. Then we visited a shrine before finally entering the historic forest. Each step felt like a natural transition, gradually helping us slow down and get into the right frame of mind to turn our attention inward. Once in the forest, our guide introduced us to Zen walking—how to place our feet, where to focus our attention, and the mindset behind it. Nothing too rigid or complicated. From there, we simply walked at our own pace. As I focused on the sensations of the earth and stones beneath my feet, an interesting thought came to me: I’d always assumed I was supporting my own body, but wasn’t the ground actually supporting me? For a moment, I felt less like someone walking through nature and more like someone being held by it, as part of its natural harmony. It was fascinating to experience how a simple physical sensation could shift my entire perspective. Sometimes, apparently, the body figures things out before the mind does. In the woods, we laid out our mats and stretched out on the forest floor for some forest bathing. And oh my goodness, that felt amazing. My mind became incredibly quiet and clear, yet somehow I felt completely full at the same time. It was as if I’d become one of the trees growing in the forest. Honestly, I could have stayed right there all day… Toward the end of the tour, we had a lovely little session to share reflections with the group. I really enjoyed both expressing my own thoughts and hearing what everyone else’s thoughts from the experience. And to top it all off, after the tour, I stopped by a nearby hot spring for a day-use soak and enjoyed yet another gift from nature. Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly be any more relaxed, the hot spring proved me wrong. It was the perfect ending to a beautiful day of reconnecting with nature—and with myself.

The scenic mountain town of Hakone is known for its hot springs resorts and excellent views of Mt. Fuji’s snow-capped peak, and some Hakone tours include a traditional onsen experience. You can also take guided forest bathing walks, visit the town’s open-air art museum, attend a tea ceremony to learn more about the culture of tea, explore Hakone’s botanical garden, or go on a boat ride on Lake Ashi to see the bright red torii gate that marks the entrance to a Shinto shrine.
