Itineraries for Your Trip to Nice
1 Day in Nice for First Timers
The first time I visited Nice, it almost felt like I wasn't in France. Yes, I saw many of the same shops and brands I was familiar with from living in Paris, but so much was different—from the food served to the number of kisses people gave their friends upon greeting and saying goodbye. However, what I was most excited about was the sunny weather and easy access to the Mediterranean Sea. Best of all, you can get a feel for the city with just one day in Nice. Here’s one way to make the most of your day.
If you only have time for one thing, make it Old Town (Vieux Nice).
It’s not always hot in Nice, even in summer: Pack a sweater for breezy Mediterranean evenings.
Nice’s historic Old Town is compact and walkable, making it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. Start your morning off on a walking tour that will get you acquainted with some of the city’s main attractions and areas. Take in views from Castle Hill and stroll along the Promenade des Anglais. Along the way, grab a pissaladière, a savory pastry topped with olives, anchovies, and caramelized onions that’s similar to pizza or focaccia.
In the afternoon, take advantage of Nice’s position on the Mediterranean Sea by going for a swim or a boat ride. Or combine a bit of both and take a boat tour out to the Mala Cave, a great place for snorkeling, or out to the neighboring coastal town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, home to one of the most popular beaches on the French Riviera: Plage de la Marinière. Then head back to Nice and freshen up for your evening adventure.
While you may be tempted to spend your evening enjoying Provençal fare at one of Nice’s many fabulous restaurants, it’s worth considering joining a food tour instead. This way, you’ll get the chance to try a whole host of different snacks and dishes, and benefit from the knowledge and recommendations (and, if you don’t speak French, translation assistance) from your insider guide. Best of all, most tours include more than enough tastings to make up an entire meal, and many include wine.
