3 Days in Koh Samui for First Timers

Curated by ViatorHello. Hola. Bonjour. Ciao. 你好. Viator's global community has traveled the world in search of local knowledge and connections to help travelers find and experience the best things to do.

The island's palm-lined sands and clear waters—so clear that you don’t need a snorkel—hold allure, but beyond these obvious draws, there’s something about Koh Samui that begs you to slow down and check your worries at the door (or boat!). While traveling in Australia and Southeast Asia, I was repeatedly drawn back to Koh Samui, escaping to the island whenever I needed to relax and reset.

Three days is just enough time to take in the highlights of Thailand’s second-largest island, but be prepared―you’ll wish you had a week or more. With this first-timer’s itinerary, you’ll explore the island by land and sea and get a taste of its spiritual sites, cultural experiences, and adventure activities.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a swim or snorkel at one of the island’s pristine beaches.

Avoid monsoon season (September-December) when rough seas and low visibility make water activities a challenge.

Day 1

Start by exploring the island on a guided tour―there’s no public transport, so the only way to get around is to hire a car or driver. Visit the sacred Big Buddha Temple and enjoy views over the island, cool off with a swim at Na Muang Waterfall, and admire the coastal scenery at Chaweng Beach.

Koh Samui’s beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, and hidden waterfalls provide a spectacular backdrop for outdoor activities. Take the wheel for a quad bike ride and venture off-road in the jungle, go ziplining through the treetops, or try a water sport like jet-skiing or flyboarding.

Day 2

Koh Samui is ideally situated for island-hopping tours to neighboring Koh Tan, Koh Madsum (Pig Island), or Ko Pha Ngan. For fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving, cruise to the tropical waters of Ang Thong National Marine Park, where you can paddle around small islands and lagoons in a sea canoe, explore sea grottoes and look for dolphins, whale sharks, and sea turtles.

Finish with an extra-special dinner date. Koh Samui has many great restaurants serving Thai specialties like pad thai or mango sticky rice with an ocean view. For a memorable night, book a private candlelit table on the sand.

Day 3

Your final day in Koh Samui is all about experiencing local culture, starting with a visit to an elephant sanctuary. Learn about conservation efforts to protect the native animals and their importance in Thai history and culture while observing the elephants in their natural environment.

There’s no better way to understand a culture than through its cuisine, so get hands-on in the kitchen while taking a local cooking class. Visit the local market with your host and discover the vast array of Thai spices, vegetables, and other ingredients, and then prepare a selection of at least four different Thai dishes.
