1 Day in Galway for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who never gets enough of the Emerald Isle.

Any time I make my way back to the land of my heritage, I have to spend some time in the lively city of Galway, where there's always live music at a pub to draw me in. It's no surprise that the city is deemed the "Cultural Heart of Ireland," as it boasts colorful streets lined with charming shops to explore.

With one day in Galway, you can maximize your time with a walking tour that teaches you about the arts and music scene and points out interesting landmarks, such as the Galway Cathedral and the Salthill Promenade. Here's a 1-day Galway itinerary for first-timers to get you started.

Galway has mild summers and cooler winters; it's always advisable to prepare for rain.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a food tour.

Morning

Galway is a compact and walkable city, so you'll want to spend some time exploring on foot if it's your first time in Galway. While you can certainly navigate Galway's Latin Quarter and the rest of the town on your own, a walking tour will provide you with a local's perspective and a history lesson, including some under-the-radar stops along the way. If you're doing a DIY version, Eyre Square, Lynch’s Castle, the Spanish Arch, and the Oscar Wilde statue are among the top stops.

Afternoon

Galway has tons of local pubs that make great lunchtime options, or you can book a food tour that will get you moving, with stops such as M. Fitzgerald's Bar for beer-battered fish and chips or a hearty stew. Learn the proper way to pour and drink a traditional Irish Guinness, or try a scoop of Irish Brown Bread or Dingle Sea Salt ice cream from Murphy's Ice Cream. It's the perfect way to end your afternoon on your first time in Galway.

Night

Galway's lively arts scene offers a rich tapestry of experiences that blend centuries-old traditions with a fresh, creative energy. On any given evening, you can enjoy Irish dance performances, live music in a traditional pub, or a street-corner fiddler just looking to perform. Snag a seat at a local theater production to end your night in the City of Tribes, or stroll the city to see what vibe draws you in.
