3 Days in Cappadocia for First Timers
Cappadocia was the first trip I took out of Istanbul when I moved to Turkey. I was drawn by the images I saw of Cappadocia’s strange rock formations and cave churches with ethereal hot air balloons floating overhead.
The pictures were nice, but Cappadocia in real life was even better. I’ve returned regularly since that first trip to explore more of Cappadocia’s stunning landscape, fascinating history, and general vastness. I’ve never forgotten the thrill of laying eyes on Cappadocia’s wild vistas for the first time. Here are my tips for experiencing this special place in three days.
The weather in Cappadocia is mostly dry and arid, with hot dusty summers and snowy winters.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the Goreme Open Air Museum, which contains the best of Cappadocia’s nature and history.
Start your first day bright and early with Cappadocia’s most iconic experience: a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Enjoy the unique perspective of the tufted volcanic rock formations (called “fairy chimneys”) and colorful valleys that punctuate Cappadocia’s landscape.
In the afternoon, come down to earth and explore the Goreme Open Air Museum, with its well-preserved frescoes in cave churches and monasteries. While cave churches dot the Cappadocia area, these are some of the best-preserved.
There are set tour routes in the Cappadocia region designed to take you to far-flung sites. This morning, go on a Green Tour, which includes the Derinkuyu Underground City, the Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery, and more.
In the early evening, experience Cappadocia’s wild landscape on a sunset quad bike excursion.
Spend your last day exploring more of Cappadocia’s valleys, rock formations, and small towns. Visit Pasabag, where the fairy chimney rock formations are particularly prominent, as well as Devrent Valley.
Later, head to Uchisar Castle before sunset to take in the views from the rock-hewn monument. As the sun sets, explore Cappadocia in the rosy light and stop by the towns of Ortahisar and Urgup to get a different perspective on the region.
