The Scottish Highlands attractions

Protruding into the Moray Firth, this tapering spit of land is one of the best marine wildlife-viewing spots in Scotland, with bottlenose dolphins often seen frolicking offshore. Standing at the tip of the spit is a mid-19th-century lighthouse that is still in operation (though automated, and a pebble beach looks across to Fort George.

Duncansby Head, located in northern Scotland, is the northernmost point on the British mainland. It is a set of dramatic sandstone cliffs that overlook the sea and offer views of Orkney, John O’Groats, and Dunnet Head. Exploring the area along the coastal pathway will give you a great opportunity to see some of the region's unique seabirds and other wildlife.

Get a peek behind the bars of a mid-19th-century jailhouse and courtroom at Inveraray Jail, one of the best-preserved prisons of its kind in the world. Inveraray Jail opens the door to Scotland’s grim and grisly past with costumed actors, interactive exhibitions, and real-life stories from former convicts.

Located in the Northwest Highlands, Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve was established in 1951, making it the oldest such preserve in the UK. Comprising a range of habitats—from lakes and woodlands to rugged mountains—the nature reserve’s highlights include Loch Maree, ancient Caledonian pine forests, and the Beinn Eighe ridge.

The A380 road from Fort William to Mallaig, better known as the Road to the Isles, is one of the most scenic drives in Scotland. The 46-mile (74-kilometer) route runs alongside the shores of Loch Eil and Loch Eilt, through small villages including Glenfinnan, Arisaig, and Morar, and a series of glens (valleys) affording spectacular views all the way.

Opened by Prince Edward in 1993, the Inverness Botanic Gardens—previously known as Floral Hall—are a tranquil escape from the bustle of the city center. In addition to outdoor gardens with seasonal floral displays, fish ponds, and the Scottish Highlands’ largest succulent display, the grounds house a café, visitor center, and two greenhouses.

One of the largest tower houses in Scotland, Castle Fraser—located within easy day-trip distance of Aberdeen—dates as far back as 1450. Visitors can explore the castle’s grand halls, ascend to its towers for top-notch views, explore its generous parklands, admire its portrait collection, and otherwise soak up its regal intrigue.

Located in Cromarty in the Black Isles, Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage & Museum comprises two buildings. There's the cottage where the esteemed geologist and writer was born, and museum in the Georgian townhouse next door, which houses a collection of Miller’s life, including fossils, manuscripts, and tools, and related gardens.

Strung along the Beauly Firth at the northern edge of Inverness, Merkinch Local Nature Reserve is a back-to-nature haven. Trails follow the shoreline, passing by tidal pools, marshes, grassland, and woodland. Spot roe deer, otters, herons, and oystercatchers, and look for dolphins and otters sliding through the adjacent firth.

Established in the 19th century by Osgood Mackenzie in the northwest Highlands, Inverewe Garden & Estate improbably features plants from around the world, including subtropical and exotic species, earning it a nickname of “Impossible Garden.” Inverewe also features an interactive museum, art gallery, visitor center, café, and gift shop.

The Scottish Highlands is known for whisky production, and you can see the process up close at Tomatin Distillery. Located in the village of Tomatin—where it was first established in 1897—here you can join a variety of distillery tours to discover the history of Scottish whisky, plus enjoy tastings at the source.

At the foot of Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis, this Scottish distillery has been producing malt whisky since 1825. Visitors can take a tour of the historic distillery, sample a selection of whiskies, and browse bottles in the shop.

The longtime home of Clan Brodie, this turreted 16th-century castle—now run by the National Trust for Scotland—is set amid more than 170 acres (70 hectares) of parkland. The restored interior offers a glimpse into Brodie family life in the castle, and features precious artworks, antique furniture, and a 6,000-book library.

One of Scotland’s top ski resorts, Cairngorm Mountain, is located on Cairn Gorm, which is Britain's sixth-highest mountain at 4,084 feet (1,245 meters). As well as skiing and snowboarding down the slopes, visitors to Cairngorm Mountain can ride Scotland’s only funicular railway to Ptarmigan, the UK’s highest restaurant.

Backed by the misty Cairngorms, surrounded by ancient pines, and boasting an award-winning sandy beach, Loch Morlich is a freshwater loch in the heart of Cairngorms National Park. Besides hiking, cycling, and mountain biking trails, there are water sports during the warmer months, including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).

Nestled on the banks of the River Ness, green and leafy Whin Park offers the miniature Ness Islands Railway, a boating pond with rowboats for hire, plus adventure play areas, an outdoor gym, picnic tables, and a kiosk with snacks. The play offerings are steadily evolving and being upgraded at one of Inverness’s most popular city parks for families.

Fairy Hill, or Tomnahurich in Scottish Gaelic, is an esker (glacier-formed ridge or mound) in Inverness that overlooks the Caledonian Canal. While visitors and locals are drawn to its 18th-century cemetery, the hill is most known for its Scottish folklore legends.

Thurso is in mainland Scotland's far north. While many travelers pass through on their way to catch the ferry to Orkney, the little town has plenty to merit a longer stay, from historic sites and quaint cafés to some of Scotland’s best surfing.

On the shores of Loch Ness, Nessieland is a miniature theme park that celebrates the famed monster that supposedly lives in the depths of the loch. Combining fun, kitsch, and education, the park features informative displays along with models of Nessie, an adventure playground, sandpit, cave, model railway, gift shop, and café.

A tranquil community forest located at the western edge of Cairngorms National Park, Strathmashie Forest offers Scottish Highlands scenery on an accessible scale. It’s home to several walking trails that range in difficulty, plus pine and Sitka forests, rich wildlife, waterfalls, ruins, and views overlooking the nearby hills and lakes.
