Viking Unst. A day trip to the Shetland island 'above all others' with resident historian and archaeologist Chris Dyer. Join professional archaeologist and landscape historian Chris Dyer for a day trip from Lerwick to engage with Unst. The island of Unst lies at the crossroads of western Viking migration routes between the North Sea and North Atlantic Ocean and was one of the first landfalls as Norwegian settlers arrived in Britain. Throughout Unst, there are over 60 Viking farmsteads, beautiful beaches, prehistoric standing stones, medieval castles and chapels, a Viking longhouse reconstruction, and spectacular cliffs. Please note- tour duration is subject to change in the event of disruption to inter-island ferries. For this reason, we do not recommend this tour as a shore excursion for cruise ship passengers and are unable to guarantee an on time return.

Join military historian and professional archaeologist Chris Dyer, a Shetland resident for over twenty years, to explore Shetland’s fascinating wartime heritage on our brand new Shetland at War tour. We will visit astoundingly well-preserved military fortifications within a range of spectacular, beautiful landscapes. During the twentieth century, Shetland played a crucially important role in the defence of Britain during both World Wars due to its strategic military location on the northern periphery of Britain and Europe. Enemy shipping and submarines favoured the North Sea as their preferred passage to the North Atlantic Ocean. Shetland was therefore an important base for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, who patrolled the surrounding waters, and for the associated military radar stations, scanning the skies and seas.
