Things to do in  Santa Cruz

One shell of a time

As the most developed island in the Galápagos Islands, Santa Cruz Island is where most travelers begin wildlife-watching adventures in one of the planet’s most biodiverse spots. Naturally, things to do in Santa Cruz revolve around animals—but you don’t have to go far to see them. Sea lions and fire-red crabs lounge on the docks of Puerto Ayora while giant, 100-year-old tortoises wander through grassy fields. Must-visit spots on the island include the Charles Darwin Research Center and the crystal-clear swimming holes of Las Grietas.

When to visit

The Galapágos Islands experience two distinct seasons: one is warm and wet (January–June) and the other is cool and dry (July–December). During the warm season, ocean conditions are calmer, which creates better visibility for snorkeling and scuba diving and less turbulent seas for sailing. If you’re prone to seasickness, this is by far the best time to visit, as the only way to hop between islands is by boat.

Getting around

The northern tip of Santa Cruz is right beside Baltra Island, where an airport welcomes flights from Quito and Guayaquil on mainland Ecuador (flights from Quito typically land in Guayaquil to pick up more passengers). From here, it’s a short drive and water taxi ride over to Santa Cruz. Puerto Ayora is the largest town, but it’s easy to explore by foot. Guided tours are also available for hassle-free exploration of Santa Cruz and other islands in the Galápagos.

Traveler tips

Sea lions and iguanas might hog the limelight when it comes to Galápagos wildlife, but the archipelago is also home to many bright and beautiful birds. One of the best places to see them is during the hike to the Media Luna volcanic crater, a gaping black basalt cavern surrounded by lush jungle. Look out for some of the 14 species of finch, the red-bellied magnificent frigatebird, and mockingbirds. Don’t forget to take a waterproof jacket, as it’s cool and rainy at this higher altitude.
