Things to do in  Hilo

Little city on a big island

Situated on the windward (eastern) side of the Big Island of Hawaii, Hilo makes a great base for exploring many of the island's numerous natural and cultural attractions. It's the biggest city on the Big Island, but Hilo's small downtown—much of which was built at the turn of the 20th century—lends it a quaint, small-town feel. Popular things to do in Hilo include visiting nearby waterfalls, snorkeling and swimming at black sand beaches, and taking excursions to nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

When to visit

The best time to visit Hilo is in January or February; not only is there generally not too much rainfall this time of year, but the city sees more rain-free days than days with showers. The Christmas and New Year's holidays and the June–August summer vacation months attract lots of travelers from the mainland, which often results in big crowds and elevated accommodation rates.

Getting around

While Hilo’s urban center is relatively small and easy to navigate on foot, the best way to really explore the city and the attractions beyond it is by renting a car or joining a tour that includes transportation. However, you can get around by bus, free of charge, via the county-run Hele-On (Let’s Go) Bus. Just note that service is not available on Sundays.

Traveler tips

For a particularly colorful treat, visit Makani’s Magic Pineapple Shack, just around the corner from the Pacific Tsunami Museum and the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center. This cute little shop draws in health-conscious travelers with its fresh juices and vitamin-rich açai bowls, but it's equally loved for its massive, brightly-hued ice cream treats. Don't miss the chance to try a Unicone—a swirl of house-made ube and dragon fruit soft serve bedazzled with colorful, star-shaped sprinkles.
