Rosenborg Castle Gardens (Kongens Have) Tours and Tickets

Rosenborg Castle was built as a summer home by the Danish King Christian IV in the 17th century. The Dutch Renaissance–style building, constructed from 1606 through 1633, became the king’s favorite castle, so much so that his deathbed request was to be transported there for his final days.

Rosenborg Castle is located at Øster Voldgade 4A, 1350 København, Denmark. It’s in a central location in Copenhagen between the King’s Garden and the Botanical Garden. The Nørreport metro station and train station are the closest to the castle, but it’s also easy to walk there from Tivoli Gardens and Kastellet fortress.

Unfortunately, Rosenborg Castle has multiple floors of exhibits and no elevator. The ground floor and the treasury, though more accessible, also have a small number of stairs. Wheelchair users can access most of the exterior grounds; to experience the interior, virtual tours are available on the castle’s website.

One of the most notable exhibits of Rosenborg Castle is the display of Danish crown jewels, located below ground level. Many of the objects throughout the castle are from the late 1600s and 1700s, beginning with King Christian IV’s collection and expanding with other royal collections over time.

Yes, guided tours are provided at Rosenborg Castle, but they must be booked two weeks in advance. Walk-in tours are not available. The tour takes an hour, with a limit of 25 people per group. On the tour you’ll see the permanent collection of art, furnishings, and other artifacts within the halls and rooms, as well as some special exhibits.

Rosenborg Castle doesn’t have any dining options on-site, but there are outdoor tables on the grounds and visitors are welcome to pack a lunch. (Food and drinks are not allowed inside.) Nearby, the King’s Garden has a café. You’ll also find eateries surrounding Rosenborg Castle’s block, including in the Museum of Natural History across the street.
