While it is not currently possible to visit Butrón Castle (Castillo de Butrón), as it is under renovation, visitors can still admire the castle’s extraordinary facade and explore its grounds. Access to the area is free, but guided tours provide more historical context. Tours begin at just €61 per adult visitor.

Butrón Castle’s history dates back to the 11th century. Later, in the 16th century, it was expanded into a fortress and was the site of bloody battles between two warring noble families. After falling into disrepair, it was renovated in the 19th century, giving it its present fairytale appearance.

Butrón Castle is located in the municipality of Gatika, in the Spanish Basque Country’s Uribe region. It is conveniently just 20 minutes north of Bilbao by car (take the BI-631 or the BI-2704) and around 1.25 hours by car from San Sebastián (take the AP-8).

Butrón Castle does not have public opening hours, as it is closed for renovations. However, its scenic grounds and surrounding century-old forest are well worth visiting. To make the most of the scenery, visit during a good-weather day in the spring or summer months (and don’t forget your picnic lunch).

There is currently no access, including wheelchair access, to Butrón Castle, as it is undergoing renovations. While the castle’s grounds are technically open to all, uneven surfaces and poorly maintained paths may mean wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility will have difficulties exploring the area.
