      Authentic Cooking Experience

If you want an authentic Sri Lankan experience, this cooking class ticks all the boxes. You arrive at the modest rural home of a Sri Lankan multi-generational family who live off their land. The short tour of their land show cases the incredible variety of herbs and spices they grow and his knowledge of the traditional medicinal qualities of the various plants. The kitchen is a traditional fire range in a humble outdoor kitchen area. All the food we prepared was organic and from their land. The variety of food we made was incredible and a testament to the richness of their diet from mere subsistence agriculture, blessed of course by the a verdant environment. As one person put it later to us, if you plant a broom in Sri Lanka it will grow 🤣. Our hosts were absolutely charming, explaining each of the dishes and the spices used. The various food preparation tasks were allocated between those of us there. The communal nature of all of us chopping, cutting, grinding, kneading the ingredients for the various dishes created such a convivial atmosphere between us and to my mind gave us a sense of what communal living must be like. Cooking the various dishes over the fires in the traditional fire range was hot hot work and caused much laughter as us unacclimatised Europeans took turns at the fire stove cooking our food, with one guest producing a Chinese style hand fan which we took turns fanning each other. It was so funny. Our food prepared, it looked and tasted more delicious than I could have imagined, eating in the traditional manner with your hand. Given that we had all prepared the food with our hands, it felt quite natural a way to experience the communality of having worked together to “break bread”

Hidden Gem in Sigiriya - don’t miss!

We had the most wonderful experience at this organic cooking class in Sigiriya! From the moment we arrived, the owner and his family welcomed us with such warmth and kindness, making us feel like part of their home. What made this experience truly unique was that all the ingredients we used came directly from their own garden. They grow a variety of fresh, organic produce right on-site, and it was fascinating to see how everything we cooked was sourced just steps away. The cooking process was hands-on and incredibly fun. The owner patiently guided us through each step, sharing stories and tips about traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. The food we prepared was absolutely delicious—rich in flavor, fresh, and authentic. Beyond the cooking itself, it was inspiring to learn about sustainable and organic farming practices firsthand. The family’s passion for what they do shines through in every detail. This wasn’t just a cooking class—it was a heartfelt cultural experience we’ll never forget. If you’re visiting Sigiriya, don’t miss out on this gem. Highly recommended!
