Above and Beyond: A Spectacular Glentanner Heli Hike Experience

Michael_T, Jan 2025
Our Glentanner Heli Hike experience was nothing short of spectacular, starting with an incredible helicopter ride over Lake Pukaki's brilliant turquoise waters. As we started our trek, we were treated to an absolutely perfect, cloudless view of Mount Cook towering against the bright blue sky – a sight our guide Brian mentioned was particularly special that day. Brian's deep knowledge of the region shone throughout our 4-hour trek; he shared fascinating insights about the alpine flora and the geological forces that shaped these magnificent peaks, making the whole experience even more meaningful. The hike itself led us through alpine meadows and was easily managed, and while it is an expensive activity, the combination of the helicopter thrill, Brian's expert guidance, and those unbeatable views of New Zealand's highest peak made it worth every penny. We loved getting to explore the historic field station and even enjoyed some snacks and a short break to fully take in the moment. It was a remarkable day that gave us access to parts of the region we never could have experienced otherwise.

We had a wonderful time...

We had a wonderful time on the heli-hike. The beautiful views were a combination of snow-capped mountains and bright blue lake. Glentanner is in a perfect location with views that you won't find anywhere else. The guide, Brian, gave us a wealth of information about the area including the history, plants and animals. He is very personable and takes care of all the logistics for you so you can just focus on enjoying the experience. We even got to see a NZ falcon flying low over our path, which was neat. We especially liked the small group/private nature of the activity and having the hiking path to ourselves, since many of the other hiking trails in the area draw large crowds.

An unforgettable experience

We booked the morning tour but the weather was not too good. Our guide Brian suggested us postpone it to the afternoon that the weather was so nice to have our hiking. Brian was very good and shared a lot of interesting information with us. We had a wonderful afternoon with him and the experience was so amazing. Really appreciated!!

Very informative guide!

Loved the helicopter flight as it was our first one! Brian was an excellent tour guide and gave us so much information about the terrain, wildlife, history, and culture. The hike was a good 4 hours, but we stopped a lot for breaks. Also, the terrain was relatively flat for about a third of the hike, the rest was downhill. Great views of Mt Cook and Lake Pukaki.
