A really good tour, well worth the money. It ended up being a private tour which was a bonus for us. Tom met us at the station and took us to the castle, stopping at interesting places on the way, then took us to the soba experience. As an ex-teacher he was very clear, kept us engaged and gave us informative explanations, sometimes backed by useful visual aids. The castle is amazing, so well preserved . The soba experience was interesting and it led to a simple but tasty lunch. Highly recommended the tour and Tom!

An enriching experience

Susy_R, Mar 2026
This was a great experience. The guide was very knowledgeable on history and grew up in the area. He also gave me recommendations on how to spend the remainder of my time in Matsumoto. It was really helpful in making sure I made the best of my time as a solo traveler. You have to take off your shoes to get into Matsumoto Castle. It can be very cold on your feet depending on the time of year. I would recommend bringing slippers if you have them.

Thank you for your kind review! We're glad the tour worked out as a private experience for you, and that Tom made good use of the walk to the castle. Those stops along the way often add as much context as the destination itself. The soba making is something we value for its simplicity and connection to the region. Turning that into lunch gives the experience a satisfying completeness. Matsumoto Castle well preserved state and seeing it with someone who can explain how and why makes the preservation feel even more impressive. Thank you for exploring with us, and for the recommendation.

Castle and noodles! Perfect!

Joyce_H, Sep 2025
The tour of Matsumoto Castle was an amazing way to start my visit to this beautiful city. The guide was knowledgeable and made it a fun adventure. But the best part for me was the soba noodle making experience. I love cooking, food, and food culture so it was perfect for me. And the result was delicious!

It‘s a very fun tour to combine history with a quick cooking class. The handmade soba are so tasty and a huge difference to the store bought ones. Can highly recommend it.

Thank you for your review! We are glad you enjoyed the mix of history and hands-on experience. Freshly made soba really does make a difference. We appreciate the recommendation and hope to see you again!

Great Fun and Educational

Jennifer_T, May 2025
Our guide is very likable and a life-long resident, except for six years in Toyko to go to university. The tour of the castle was very interesting and educational, and the wine-making class was just plain fun. We then ate our noodles in the small restaurant below the room where we made them. All a fun, intimate experience.

Thank you for your review! We are so glad to hear you enjoyed the castle tour and had fun during the soba-making experience. It is always a pleasure to share a more local, hands-on side of Matsumoto, and we are happy it felt enjoyable from start to finish. We appreciate you joining us and hope to see you again someday!

Basic cooking exercise decent tour of casle.

Kai wasn't enthusiastic guide but his English was a bit limited and he was a bit hard to understand, not his problem but ours as we are Americans in Japan. He did his best to point out interesting features of the castle. The soba noodle portion of the tour was okay. The MasterChef had little interaction with us even though he spoke decent English but we interacted very little with him . His American assistant was very kind and helpful. Although we made our noodles and the result that we ate in the downstairs restaurant was delicious there were numerous charges for add-ons if you wanted more than your basic noodle dish and there was little explanation of the significance or history of what we were eating. Not the best value for the money.

Thank you for booking our tour and taking the time to write what is a very helpful review. Kei is a knowledgeable guide and loves showing visitors around the castle, so we are happy to hear that that came across. Many of our guides are local therefore English is not their first language. It is one of the reasons we have some accompany the tour – as we did on the day of your tour – to help the conversation along when there are gaps in communication. We will continue to work on that and thanks for your understanding. We are also always working to deliver the best possible experience when it comes to soba-making. Your feedback, that you would have liked more direct conversation with the soba master is helpful. We will discuss that with him and all of our guiding staff to encourage as much communication as possible, including the significance of soba in local food culture. We are also glad to hear that you enjoyed your soba. In terms of additional costs, the tour page details that soba is included in the cost of the tour but additional food options are not. This is done to keep the tour price as low as possible while allowing guests the option of additional food, should they wish to pay for it. We will review the tour page to make sure this is as clear as possible. Thank you!

Two events in one Tour

This was a great tour mixing history with a fun lesson in soba preparation. We arrived early and were able to get into the castle quickly. The building is impresssive from the outside but it was great to be able to go inside to see the layout and some articles of history. The stairs were very steep so not suitable for all. Lovely area around with a river running by. We then walked for a short while and went upstairs in a restaurant. We were each given a place on the table and the elements needed to make the soba. There was a lot of kneeling of the raw material and then had to cut into tiny strips. The owner helped where needed. We all managed to produce reasonable soba which they then took away. We were then able to eat it in the restaurant downstairs. Little taste but we were all proud to produce a good quality dish. Thanks to Sylvyne for looking after us and giving us an excellent tour.

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed all aspects of your tour in Matsumoto! Matsumoto Castle is a registered National Treasure, making a visit there something of a must-do. As for the soba-making, we are also glad to hear that you enjoyed this experience. Matsumoto is known throughout Japan for its delicious soba, so combining a soba-making experience with a tour of the castle is a great way to enjoy the city. As our soba master says, “Nothing tastes better than soba noodles made with your very own hands.” Thank you again for your kind words!
