We had a wonderful private full-day tour of Akita with Viator. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and the itinerary perfectly mixed nature, culture, and local flavor. We loved the peaceful walk at Dakigaeri Gorge, the stunning views at Lake Tazawa, and our private sushi lunch. Visiting the Akita dog house to meet two Akitas was a bit campy but fun! The Samurai District in Kakunodate was fascinating, especially meeting the owner of the only home still occupied by descendants of the original samurai family. Highly recommended!

This a very relaxing day in the Samurai town of Kukunodate. The day was customized by the tour operator based on our preferences.
We took the bullet train from Akita to Kukunodate and back at the end of the day. This is about a one hour trip each way and the tickets were provided with the tour.
We walked about Kukunodate to the Samaria house region. We were too early for the cherry trees to bloom so we missed this but because we were early in the season there were very few folks about. The first Samaria house that we toured was owned by the original family and a member of the family was our guide. He was the 15th generation of this family. We then toured another Samaria house that was larger and had a large grounds area. Entrance fees (500 yen per person) were at our expense as previously arranged.
Next we walked to the Kukunodate Onsen. This was our second Onsen experience in Japan. This Onsen was much hotter than the previous experience. The price for the Onsen was 1,000 Yen per person.
Our guide had reserved a table for us at a local restaurant. We hosted our guide for the meal. It was fantastic. It was fun to chat with our guide during our meal which is always enjoyable for us.
We wondered about for a bit visiting local shops and a sweets shop before catching the train back to Akita.
In Akita, our guide had another destination for us planned but we concluded the tour after a long day.
