loved it....

Jeff_R, Feb 2026
This was awesome. From the scary drive up the dirt road, to playing with the animals. It was really special, not to mention the views are spectacular. The staff was tremendous.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

We are thrilled you found your visit to our farm "awesome" Jeff. We are so privileged to live in such a stunning location on the Banks Peninsula and do enjoy sharing our views and our alpaca with our guests.

OMG so great!

MartinL, Feb 2026
This experience exceeded our expectations! Our guide provided a ton of interesting information before the animal encounter. We first interacted with the male alpacas. Some were more interested in eating than in people but others were very happy to be petted. Their fur feels like carpet and their eyes are enormous. We moved to the area with females and babies and interacted by feeding them. That certainly got their interest! The farm also has a store with really lovely alpaca wool items.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you Martin for your in-depth review! We are chuffed you had a fabulous time experiencing the various personalities of our alpaca. Our tour guides really do enjoy sharing their passion and knowledge of the unique alpaca.

A huge hit with our 19 month old. The staff was excellent at helping point out the gentlest animals for us to approach who wouldn’t be scared by our son’s predictably unpredictable toddler movements.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

We are so fortunate our tour guides understand the needs of our guests. We hope you were able to capture some memorable moments of your son interacting with our alpacas. Bring him back when he is talking so he can converse with them!

Excellent opportunity to...

Pam_C, Jan 2026
Excellent opportunity to get close to Alpacas, it was raining when we arrived but they provided raincoats, good commentary from the staff who explained everything about the alpacas, great fun feeding the females, good views of the Peninsula

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thanks Pam for taking the time to review your visit to our farm. We are delighted you enjoyed feeding the alpaca and looking at our stunning views of the Akaroa Harbour.

Pretty cool experience

Michael_H, Dec 2025
The tour consists of 3 ares. The first you get to pet the alpacas, the second you get to see the newborn alpacas but for obvious reasons you’re not allowed to pet them, and in the third area you are given grass in bowls and get to feed them. That was pretty cool the guide Jean was great

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you Michael for the 5 star review of your visit to our farm. Your tour guide Jean is very knowledgable and loves sharing her passion of alpaca with our guests. We'd love to see you come back again some time!

Amazing experience with alpacas

April_L, Nov 2025
The alpacas are very friendly and love to eat. I loved being able to hand feed the baby alpacas. My kids also really enjoyed petting them. The people who worked at the farm were so helpful and informative. Wonderful experience all around.

Cracker Alpaca

Very family friendly, good value and very informative staff. Stunning scenery and lovely shop. Homemade biscuits

Don’t miss this gem

Michael_T, Mar 2025
One of our favorite excursions on our vacation. Our guide “I” was terrific- very knowledgeable and informative and the alpacas were really fun to interact with. The farm is also situated on a beautiful hill overlooking Akaroa, a quaint and gorgeous town/city. The staff was also great. We needed to shift our time at the last minute and there was zero hassle!

Fun with Alpacas

Peter_R, Feb 2025
It was a simple and great time. We learned about alpacas in general - life, mating cycle, colors of fleece, temperament, spitting(yikes!), males v females and more. We saw a newborn (3 hours old) and We then got to go pet and cuddle with the Alpacas, which was a ton of fun. After that, we got to feed them- either by bowl or by hand. Since they don't have upper front teeth, it made it a less stressful:) The hour long tour ended with some home made cookies and drinks. A perfect amount of time and a great way to spend an hour learning about something new. Also, expect to spend some money in their great gift shop- some really nice things to bring home!

Response from Host, Mar 2025

Thanks for your amazing review, we really appreciate it! We're happy to hear you had such a great experience visiting Shamarra, you'll have to come back! :)

Lots of cuddles!

Elaine_S, Feb 2025
Beautiful scenery!!! Great hosts with an educational introduction. Then lots of times with the alpacas - cuddling, petting, and feeding. We have sooo many photos.

Response from Host, Mar 2025

You can never have too many photos of Alpacas :) Thanks for visiting Shamarra!

Great Experience!

Irina_M, Jan 2025
Visiting the alpaca farm was an incredibly enjoyable experience. The team was very friendly and shared fascinating insights about the lifestyle and care of the alpacas, showing how much they enjoy looking after them. Despite the rainy weather, it didn’t ruin our experience, as the team kindly drove us from the caravan parking to the farm to ensure we stayed dry. We also loved the farm shop and couldn’t resist buying cozy and warm alpaca socks to take home!

Response from Host, Jan 2025

Thank you for your lovely review! We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your visit. It’s always a pleasure to share our passion for alpacas, and we’re thrilled you found the farm shop and those cozy alpaca socks irresistible. Come back anytime!

Lovely team. They’re so passionate about their work. It was a great afternoon with them. Alpacas are super friendly. But more than that, I really enjoyed interacting with the staff - they genuinely love their work and care for the animals. It was a phenomenal experience.

Great tour to learn about Alpacas!

Andy_L, Jun 2024
They have 170 alpacas there and it’s a great one hour tour to learn more about the animals! You will get the chance to feed the alpacas as well. They will rush you a bit at the end of the tour, but I will still highly recommend it to everyone!

Response from Host, Jun 2024

Thanks for visiting Shamarra! Happy to hear you had a good experience visiting us :) see you next time!

Very well organised, informative and interactive tour

Denise_T, May 2024
Very well organised, informative and interactive tour! There's a lot to learn about how to interact respectfully with the alpacas and Rising Sun, the king of the alpacas here, is such a star. The guides were also very helpful and egged us to interact with the alpacas, showing us individual sweet spots of each individual alpaca. The scenery was beautiful as well! At the end of the tour, they even provided light refreshments and the toilets were very clean.

Response from Host, Jun 2024

Thank you for your awesome review! We have a great and knowledgeable team of tour guides and of course our star alpacas - happy to hear you experienced that when visiting us! We hope to welcome you back in the future :)

No way to get there

Tammie_F, Feb 2024
Not the Alpacas fault however, we came in on a cruise and there was absolutely no way to get to the farm. No taxis, no Uber nothing. We could not get there and we were not the only ones with tickets and no way to get there. My daughter and her friend were so disappointed. Viator should note, there is no transportation available in the town and not accessible if you don't have a car.

Response from Host, Mar 2024

Transport options are available on our website which could been organised prior to your arrival or could have emailed us directly with the information details provided by Viator or website.

Disappointed

Paul_H, Feb 2024
We were not told had to get transportation prior to arriving and so we were unable to go since there is no transportation in the city. Then were told through Viator (not Shamarra farms) that it was refundable but when applied for it told 100% fee

Response from Host, Feb 2024

We provided detailed information on transportation options when you emailed us on January 27th, for arrival into both Lyttelton and Akaroa as you weren't sure which port you were arriving in. As a reminder, below were the details provided. Viator applied their refund policies as you booked through them and not through us directly. 5 stars

ZINIAN_W, Mar 2026
Chinese guide is very careful! This tour includes parking spaces, so friends who are driving have absolutely no need to worry. Not only that, the Chinese guide will also help to take photos, not worry about not having a photo match with the lamb! Add cake and juice, without worrying about starving or thirsty. Cute and cute!
