Riding a bike to the attractions in Sintra was an amazing experience. However, I'm from Chicago USA where I'm used to riding my bike with big buses and traffic with cars. That being said- Sintra is a mountain - be prepared and be aware of all the winding roads, buses, traffic, etc. Plus getting off your bike and walking through all the palaces, castles, etc. it's a lot of leg power, even with an E-bike.
I had an excellent experience with Jose from the E-bike rental- 5 stars!!

Thank you, Erc! Coming from Chicago with plenty of city riding experience, I appreciate you calling out just how different Sintra's mountain roads, winding turns, and traffic can feel — that's really useful for other guests to know before they set out. And you're right, even with the e-assist, all that walking around the palaces and castles adds up! So glad you had an excellent experience overall. Hope to welcome you back for another ride!
This was so much fun I got to see more than I ever thought I could in a half a day. Would recommend to everyone. The e bike rental was easy and he was super nice and responsive.

Thank you, Alexis! I love hearing that you managed to see so much in just half a day — that's exactly what the e-bikes are great for. So glad the rental process was easy and that I could be quick to help along the way. Hope to welcome you back for a full-day adventure next time!
The host was excellent, providing us with all of the things we needed for a successful journey, including battery packs for our phones. He even fitted our helmets and made sure the bikes were adjusted perfectly. He loaded us up with gps routes and provided us with paper maps and a detailed list of the sights along the route, including a lunch spot. I think he even had a backpack that we could use, but I had one with me.
The hills of Sintra were a bit much for us, though, as typical middle-aged casual bicyclists and exercisers (I walk 3 miles daily and do yoga, my husband golfs a few times a week). You will start in town, which at 10:00 am in July is filled with buses, taxis, and tourists not paying attention to bikes. Once you pull away from the city, the ride is beautiful, but you still have to watch for buses and cars that may come whizzing around the narrow bend. Our host told us to ride in the middle of the road and move over when we have room, as the autos have to give one and a half meters of clearance to bicyclists. He said the autos would pass if we’re riding on the side of the road. He was not wrong, but it was mentally difficult to stay in the middle of the road and feel safe. Also, most of the hills were very steep and required quite a bit of work to top. That was ok, after all, we weren’t on mopeds. But coming back down was a little testy, as the steepness makes for a very fast ride, the roads are curvy with the occasional surprise bus or car, and we started to worry that we may wear out the brakes.
After visiting Regaleira and Monserrate, we returned to Sintra for lunch and debated about whether or not to attempt the 20 minute ride to Peña. We ended up leaving the bikes locked up and took an Uber to the top. The road was narrow and crowded with buses, cars, and tuk-tuks. There were spots you could look right down the side of the mountain. It was very, very steep. If you want to do this, check that the bicyclists have a different route to go up and down, or be very confident in your ability.
For reference, we’ve rented e-bikes in Alaska and New Zealand in hilly but low traffic areas and loved it. If you are comfortable on a bike in traffic and on very steep hills, this is an awesome adventure! If you are the least bit concerned, consider a different mode for visiting Sintra (or go during a low traffic season).

Thank you for such a detailed and honest review — it's exactly the kind of insight future guests need before deciding if this is the right fit for them! I always try to set guests up for success with GPS routes, paper maps, fitted helmets, battery packs, and a well-planned lunch stop, so I'm glad all of that came through clearly.
Your point about the traffic in town and the steep climbs is fair and important — Sintra really is hilly, and riding confidently in traffic does take some getting used to, even with an e-bike doing most of the work. I appreciate you sharing the advice about riding in the middle of the road too, since that guidance comes from real safety experience, not just theory.
It's also great that you made the call to swap to an Uber for the Pena climb rather than pushing through — knowing your own comfort level on the road is exactly the right approach. Thank you for such a balanced, thoughtful review, and I hope your legs have recovered!
Close to the train station. Awesome host and easy communication! He gave great route recommendations. Loved the GPS app and easy to follow. Amazing way to see Sintra without the crowds. We loved eating at the bicycle restaurant!

No crowds and no sweating.
Once again, thank you very much, and maybe, who knows, see you soon.
Fantastic self guided way to see the sights of Sintra and the Coastline whilst getting a working and connecting to the scenery. Well thought out routes through a variety of landscape. Highly recommended.

Hello Jacquel, thank you very much for your feedback. See you soon.
We did this on 18th Oct. It was very well organised. The app works great and you get an extra charge pack to make your phone last the journey. If you're used to normal sized bikes these fat tyre ebikes may seem a little cumbersome but the battery lasts for ages to get you up those hills. My partner had to get off a couple of times as she struggled to get up the hill despite the assistance but this was only a couple of times. If you want to visit some of the locations to and do the course you might struggle with time so be mindful. Also, the very beginning might have horrendous traffic but this disappears fairly soon.

Hello Stefan_s, Thank you for your description of what it's like to spend a day with us.
In some parts, the road is quite steep, requiring some experience riding a bicycle and a bit of lung capacity, but in the end, you always end up with a smile on your face.
Thank you very much, and I hope to see you soon.
Fun, Fun, Fun…and medium exercise. Bring water. Pedal any speed you wish. Plenty of watts. Good energy

We really had a great time biking through Sintra. I highly recommend! It was a great way to see all of the sites and avoid the crazy traffic. I also loved the app/ Maps, which made the experience very easy to navigate. It was such a fun day!

Thank you very much, and hopefully see you soon!
It was a good time and we loved the palaces and seeing the countryside, but be warned that some of the hills are steep and very, very long and that some of the trip has heavy taxi and bus traffic, especiallly near pena palace (at least when we went in late July).

Hello Michael, I hope everything is well with you.
Thank you very much for your feedback.
It's true that some parts of the route have some very steep climbs, but with the help of the electric motor they are manageable. Regarding the traffic near the most iconic monuments of Sintra (Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira), it's impossible to avoid because the only access road to these monuments allows all types of vehicles, from large buses to polluting tuk-tuk vehicles, practically all year round.
See you soon, I hope.
Beautiful country. Cabo Rocas was really cool. Jose was super helpful, good dude. Castle pens was beautiful but crowded. No need to go inside
Good price for a full day of entertainment. Terrific customer service, so very friendly and helpful.
Amazing bike ride from Sintra to Cabo da Roca. Catia was extremely helpful. She did a great job, I appreciate her work. Would recommend her and this bike ride to anyone!
