Top Uluru How to Get Around

With just the right amount of time to experience the very best of Australia’s Red Centre, this journey takes you deep into its most iconic landscapes. Stand in awe at Uluru as it changes colour with the light, explore the striking domes of Kata Tjuta, and walk through the dramatic gorges of Kings Canyon. Each day brings a new highlight, with time to truly take it all in, not just rush through it. As the sun sets, settle into an authentic outback camping experience under a sky full of stars simple, real, and unforgettable, with a soft landing at the end of each day. Start your adventure in Alice Springs and finish in Yulara, having experienced the Red Centre the way it’s meant to be seen: raw, powerful, and unforgettable.

Getting around the base of Uluru on foot is a challenge—the monolith is large and takes a long time to circumnavigate on foot. Traveling via Segway means you can make it all the way around in a short amount of time. Instruction and provided equipment mean even beginners can take part in this tour, with a guide in the lead providing navigation and commentary. This self-drive tour allows you the freedom to just meet your tour at Uluru instead of trekking to a central meeting point.

Immerse yourself into the history of Mparntwe (pronounced m’barn-twa), the Arrernte name of Alice Springs. Learn how it came to be the central hub of the Australian outback by visiting the historical sites that played a big part in the evolution of a town originally called Stuart and its progression to what Alice Springs is today. Led by an experienced local tour guide who will share history and interesting information about the town as you move between the key attractions including the School of Air, Royal Flying Doctors Tourist Facility, Telegraph Station and Anzac Hill Lookout.

The day opens with ancient Arrernte rock carvings at Ewaninga, then swings into genuine outback station life at Ooraminna, a outback station that's also a real film set. From there it's sweeping desert views at Red Dune Lookout before diving into Alice Springs' most distinctive institutions: the Old Ghan's pioneering rail history, the School of the Air's remote-education story, the Telegraph Station's 150-year role connecting Australia to the world, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service's lifesaving reach across the outback. The day closes at Anzac Hill, watching the MacDonnell Ranges catch the afternoon light. It's this combination — Indigenous heritage, pastoral history, colonial-era landmarks, and living outback institutions — plus small-group comfort and knowledgeable local guiding, that makes the Alice Explorer feel less like a checklist of stops and more like a genuine crash course in what makes Central Australia unlike anywhere else.
