This is an incredible tour: the city’s past came alive in this tour. Our guide has a PhD in local history and knew how to best explain the prominence of Liverpool as a port city and its unique connections with the world. I cannot recommend highly enough: don’t miss it if you want to understand the city

I’m not normally a history buff but I found this tour to be fascinating. John talked very fast but I could understand him easily and he was never boring so he held my full attention. That’s not always easy to do but he did! There’s quite a lot of history in this area. You will be outside the majority of the time so dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes.

Wonderful look at the city's maritime history

    Ed_C, May 2026
Very informative tour. Not taxing at all. Mainly down by the waterfront talking about Liverpool's maritime history. Lots of interesting historical facts.

    Excellent tour!

    Tamara_C, May 2026
We learned so much about Liverpool’s history and its context relative to what was going on in the rest of the world. Our guide was a local history professor and was able to answer all our questions.

    Liverpool history tour

    Jazz_J, Apr 2026
I recently joined John’s walking tour in Liverpool and came away genuinely impressed. This isn’t your typical surface-level city tour. John has a deep understanding of Liverpool’s ancient history, and he brings it to life in a way that’s both engaging and easy to follow. You get a real sense of how the city developed over time — from its early roots through to the character it has today — with plenty of detail that you simply wouldn’t pick up on your own. The pacing was spot on, with time to take everything in without feeling rushed. John is clearly passionate about the subject and delivers the information in a relaxed, conversational style that keeps you interested throughout. There are also some great insights into The Beatles, but these are woven naturally into the broader story of the city rather than dominating the tour, which I appreciated. Overall, a really worthwhile experience. If you’re looking to understand Liverpool beyond the obvious landmarks, this tour is well worth your time.

    History walking tour around Liverpool

fantastic way to learn the history of Liverpool and get a sense of where everything is...highly recommend this tour at the start of your stay in Liverpool...even before doing all the Beatles stuff

    Disappointing.

    Ele_O, Mar 2026
They cancelled 50 minutes before the walk because of the bad weather. It was barely raining and 30 mins later it stopped. Have the feeling the guide wasn't feeling it. Such a shame as they were my last two hours in Liverpool and I planned things around it. Now waiting for the refund

    Excellent

We were amazed how the entire Liverpool history was packed into two hour tour while still remaining entertaining and informative. Highly recommended

    Last‑Minute Cancellation and Poor Communication

    Fiona_T, Mar 2026
The night before the tour, I received a message from the tour operator stating that the tour time had been changed from 10:00 to 13:00 due to road closures. At 7:00 the next morning, I replied to explain that I had a Mersey River Cruise booked at 12:00 (lasting around 50 minutes), but that I would try my best to make the 13:00 tour. I also asked whether I would still be eligible for a full refund if I could not make it in time. I received no response. Despite the lack of confirmation, I travelled to the meeting point and arrived promptly at 13:00. No guide or group was present. I immediately called the p”tour operator several times, but none of my calls were answered. At 13:01, I sent a message stating that I was at the Royal Liver Building entrance facing the river and could not see anyone. I waited for around ten minutes with no reply and eventually had to leave. Only about half an hour later did I receive a message informing me that the tour had been cancelled entirely. This was the first time I was told the tour would not go ahead. Had I been informed earlier—especially when I had already contacted them in the morning—I could have planned my day differently and made better use of my time in the city. Instead, I travelled to the meeting point unnecessarily, wasted valuable time, and missed the opportunity to organise my visit more effectively. Although a refund was eventually issued, the way this situation was handled was unacceptable.

Unable to tour, but operator gave excellent communication

    Mary_S, Mar 2026
Although we were unfortunately unable to attend the tour due to a family emergency, our review is based entirely on the tour operator’s communication. From start to finish, their responses were prompt, clear, and consistently professional. When booking tours, communication can make up a significant part of the overall experience, and they truly delivered in this regard. If we find ourselves in Liverpool again, we would not hesitate to rebook this tour.

    Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you for your review. We look forward to providing you the tour should you visit Liverpool again. We hope you had a great time in the city. Kind Regards John Glob City Experience

    Wonderful introduction to Liverpool

This was a truly engaging and enjoyable tour of Liverpool. John is very informative. I learned so much about the area.

    Cancelled

    Martin_S, Jan 2026
Viator cancelled the walk 10 minutes before it was due to start. We had travelled and paid all travelling expenses. Really disappointed not to get earlier cancellation

    Response from Host, Jan 2026

Unfortunately, we had to cancel this booking and this event was cancelled for the customers who have left these cancelation reviews. We provided you with a full refund and an alternative date for the tour. This cancelation is a very rare occurrence as we do not usually cancel any of our tours. We have made a note of your comments as customer satisfaction is paramount to us. Kind Regards John Global City Experience

    Informative tour from local historian

    Paul_b, Dec 2025
Extremely informative talk from John who very much enjoys passing on his knowledge. Kept us very entertained and despite the weather kept our spirits up. John wanted us to ask more questions but he covered so much we didn’t need to. We would recommend this value for money tour of Liverpool’s history.

Detailed insights into Liverpools history, especially everything to do with commerce, the docks and its not always glorious past. The two hours went by very quickly, despite the cold and windy morning.

    Very Late Cancellation.

    Sophie_F, Oct 2025
We booked the day before but the tour was cancelled for a family emergency 15 mins before the start when we were already at the location. We were asked it we could start 1 hour later, but we couldn't do that. We've noticed other reviewers have said the same and whilst we have every sympathy if this is the case, the late cancellation meant we were unable to book another tour, so it was a bit disappointing. It was paid for up front and the money was a 3-7 day return. It would probably would be good practice to have a couple of guides that can back each other up if this were to happen, as it seems to have happened a few times here.

    Brilliant

    Michelle_H, Oct 2025
This was fantastic, I am from Liverpool and did not know any of the history. John was extremely knowledgeable and a lovely human. Thank you!

    A memorable walk through time.

If a cold day the wind from the river can be unpleasant so wear a warm coat/jacket and comfortable shoes.
