Top Haarlem Culture in 2026

Do you know that Haarlem residents are named after mosquitoes, and this is where the tulip bubble burst? But most people miss out on learning all this because they see Haarlem through a train window on the way to Amsterdam. They miss the city that lost a siege, and they never know how six people hid behind a false wall while the Gestapo searched the house around them. Start conveniently at the station and walk with this self-guided audio tour of Haarlem that runs entirely from an app on your phone and takes you past 17 stops, including hofjes, a medieval gate, and a watchmaker’s shop with a secret. Along the way, you'll meet a widow whose name became a Dutch word, a red-haired resistance fighter, and a ten-year-old Mozart at a giant organ. Start whenever you like, pause for coffee, resume where you left off. Over 30,000 travelers have used the self-guided tours. Ideal for history lovers who want Haarlem's stories, not just facts. Booking is backed by a full refund guarantee.

A self-guided walking game through Haarlem's old centre, following the city's story of printing, painting and quiet charity: the hidden courtyards (hofjes) built for the poor, museums grown from merchants' collections, and the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, whom Haarlem still credits with inventing movable type. Each stop hides a puzzle you solve on your phone, at your own pace. The app tells you what you are looking at: an 1849 chemist's shop, the Proveniershof, the almshouses that became the Frans Hals Museum, Teylers, the oldest museum in the Netherlands (1784), the Bakenesserkerk's slender tower, and the town hall built where a count's hunting lodge stood in 1370. Hints are built in; chat support answers 24/7. The route starts at the Jopenkerk, a brewery inside a former church, and ends at the Coster statue on the Grote Markt. About 4 km on flat streets, 90 to 120 minutes. Easy, in English or Dutch, good for couples, families and first-time visitors.

It is one of our favorite tours. We designed it for everyone, who is tired of the city bustle; and for those, who do not have a lot of time, but wish to see as much as possible. We will meet you at the train station in Haarlem. We will visit the magnificent main square, The Cathedral of St.Bavon, the meat guild, picturesque courtyards (hofje). On bikes through the dune reserve with fantastic views we will head towards the North Sea up the road, which goes down. Don't be surprised, this is not a figure of speech at all! The bike paths are perfect here, and not a soul on them. If the bike ride is not for you, we can go by bus. It is as picturesque as the bike ride. Along the way we will stop in the National Park to have a picnic there. If we will be lucky, then we will see rabbits, foxes, deer or the highland cattles! And we will definitely see the North Sea! Let's go!:) More tours(food, history, street art, modern art, museums, countryside) in the Netherlands on Snurk.Travel.
