Top Arusha Day Trips

See the Ngorongoro Crater on your own schedule with a private day safari from Arusha. You get your own 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and a local driver-guide, so there are no strangers in the vehicle and you decide how long to stay at each sighting. The crater is often called Africa's Garden of Eden. It is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, 600 meters deep and about 20 km across, with roughly 25,000 animals living on its floor. It is one of the few places in Tanzania where you have a real chance of spotting the rare black rhino, alongside lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, zebras and wildebeest. Flamingos often gather on Lake Magadi. After an early pickup from your Arusha hotel, you drive about 3 hours through the highlands to the crater rim, take in the view, then descend for a full game drive. Lunch is a picnic on the crater floor. Conservation fees, the crater service fee, lunch and bottled water are all included, so you pay nothing extra on the day.

See Lake Manyara by vehicle and on foot on this private day trip from Arusha. You get your own 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and a local driver-guide, plus a guided walk with an armed park ranger, so you experience the park in two very different ways. Lake Manyara sits at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Your game drive passes through lush groundwater forest full of baboons and blue monkeys, then out to open woodland and floodplains where elephants, giraffes, zebras and buffalo are common. Stop at the hippo pool and scan the lake for flamingos and pelicans. The park is known for its tree-climbing lions, though they are never guaranteed. Then leave the vehicle for a 1 to 2 hour walk with your ranger, learning to read tracks and spot birds up close. A picnic lunch is served in the park. Park fees, walking and ranger fees, lunch and water are all included. Minimum age is 12 because of park walking rules.
