Excellent experience with a knowledgeable guide. It was really good from start to finish.
Very informative.

I had a very wonderful experience in the cave.
The tour guide was very friendly and helpful.
There was ample parking.

The caves were easily one of the most unique experiences we’ve had so far—full of incredible history and natural beauty. The glowworms aren’t quite as dense as the marketing images suggest, but the experience is still stunning and well worth the drive from Auckland.

It was well organised and Tummy our tour guide was brilliant.. the caves were great and the glowworms amazing to see!! Great day out for all ages.

Great and Amazing for a 4 year old. And even for me. i feel it was like staring at the cosmos in a cave. Definitely a worthwhile visit
Janice_W, Apr 2026
Jacob was fun. He spun some good yarns. Tried to get groups together in the boat when he could. Very polite.

Alright so it’s definitely a fun experience but it’s quite overhyped. The glow worms don’t quite look like what’s in the promotional pictures and the brochures. But it’s still quite a sight to see. Once you’re actually in the boat, you’re left wishing that the experience lasted a little longer. But all things said and done, I’d still recommend it if you’re an hour’s drive from Waitomo and haven’t seen the glow worms at all. Our guide was very knowledgeable, funny and friendly which made the experience more worthwhile!

Beautiful, but definitely not worth it. Very expensive (around $165 for two people) for what it is, and even though it is a 45 minute tour, it is just standing (or sitting) in one of 3 rooms (2 of which have no gloworms). The boat tour (10 minutes) is the best part, and very nice, but it is just rowing around in circles in the same small room. Definitely better options for cheaper in the area. It is no wonder why they forbid you from taking photos... The gift shop was not great - gloworm keychains for $41.90 is a bit excessive. The tour guide, was great though!

Very cool experience but pricey for what you actually get. Would prefer a longer or more involved tour.
Nicolette_M, Apr 2026
The caves are beautiful but you can’t take any photos and it was really over sold on how great it was considering
Joanne_L, Apr 2026
One of the best experiences! I had no expectations just that my son has always wanted to see a cave since he was 2. Our tour guide was very friendly and funny, the history was very interesting. I would go back again. I left feeling cleansed and calm ☺️

Well organised trip worth seeing a unique feature of your visiting the area. Make sure you book in advance people were turning up and there was no availability

First of all, our guide was informative and beautiful [Cup of Tea].
Besides that, we drove for 2 hrs early in the morning to get there, my son was so excited. Arrived at tour desk, staff seemed bored and disinterested. The tour itself lasted no more than 40 minutes and was 90% made up of walking through a limestone cave. We eventually arrived at the glow-worms, hopped in a boat and saw the glow for 5 minutes, and the tour was concluded and had to make our way out. We left with no photos (not allowed) and feeling flat. We then had the rest of the day free as were expecting at least a couple of hours of tour for $200.

Great experience. Really friendly guide and would definitely recommend the boat trip.
Would have loved to have taken photos, but I understand the rule

It was a rainy day but we weren't bothered. The venue is well presented and naturally forms into its surroundings. The guides are fun and provide some great light heartedness to the experience. Our kids loved the guided tour and particularly the boat ride. As someone not fond of tight spaces (i am 6'1) i found once you get passed the first few metres there was no issue with space, i just needed to duck for a bit. Well worth the time! Interesting fact was to learn the worms use the same kind of venom as spiders to trap their prey.
Shell_P, Apr 2026
This is a once in a lifetime experience of pure magic and wonder! It was as though we were in a micro universe with stars shining above us in the caves!
Sandy_T, Apr 2026
A different cave experience to any other I have have seen. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the guides were really knowledgeable, friendly and funny.
Restaurant could make improvements. Do prep prior to open time and not make customers wait or feel they are rushing you. Could be more choices on menu. Breaky had no plain egg choices, no avocado etc.
Gift shop was too expensive.
Glow worm pics a little deceiving. Not blueish and not that bright or as many. Are they sick?

Amazing and humbling experience. Highly recommend. Suitable for school children and over. Danny was our guide who made it a fun and informative experience.
Vanessa_M, Apr 2026
A short tour 45mins but stunning view of the the Glow Worms and great commentary from our Guide. ACE

Danny was very informative and amusing. The caves were beautiful. I’d recommend to anyone who comes over to the north island.

The experience at Waitomo Glowworm Caves is nothing short of magical - a true natural wonder that feels almost otherworldly.
The guided tour is well-paced and informative, beginning with a walk through impressive limestone formations, where stalactites and stalagmites have formed over thousands of years. The guides share engaging stories and insights, adding depth and context without overwhelming the experience.
The highlight, without question, is the silent boat ride through the glowworm grotto. As you drift quietly through the darkness, thousands of tiny bioluminescent lights above create the illusion of a star-filled night sky underground. The stillness and silence make the moment incredibly serene and almost surreal.
What stands out most is how well-managed and respectful the experience is - preserving the delicate ecosystem while allowing visitors to fully appreciate its beauty. The no-photography rule in the grotto helps maintain that sense of presence and authenticity.
Overall, it’s a beautifully curated experience that blends natural beauty, storytelling, and tranquillity. A must-do when visiting New Zealand, and one that leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve left the caves.

The tour itself was great, very well operated and friendly guides. Expensive but a natural spectacle. We were however very disappointed to see that it is considerably cheaper to book directly with Waitomo Caves, will know for next time not to pay for third party to clip the ticket
Jackie_C, Apr 2026
The caves were awesome to see and the commentary was informative and fun. The glow worm cave boat tour was a little disappointing on our view. Not as bright or voluminous as I was expecting.
olivia_t, Apr 2026
we came as a,family, with no expectations, it was amazing, incredible knowlegde and beautiful enviroment, so peaceful and respectful on the enviroment
Ashini_W, Apr 2026
It was a great experience, the tour guide was so lovely and the presentation was excellent. Unfortunately there was a screaming baby in our group so we missed about 50% what the tour guide was saying. It would have been great if you put some age restrictions as it wasn't a plesent experience for the rest of the group.
Wayne_C, Apr 2026
Great time and experience great tour guide lots of knowledge and put the people at ease and tired to get every one involved
RAY_W, Apr 2026
good guide good tour a lot of cave walking but not so much of worm watching
the overnight chalets were good
Matthew_S, Apr 2026
Quick, neat, informative. The glowworms were very cool. Tiny boat ride was fun. Guide was funny and nice
Lucy_S, Mar 2026
Very well organised! Get there in good time and there is a brilliant shop and cafe to spend your time in before your tour. Tour guide was so informative and really helpful around the caves and getting us into the boat. We went with two children (8&10) and was a great experience for them!
Hayley_H, Mar 2026
So beautiful! Stay quiet in the caves so others can enjoy a truly magical experience! Getting in the boat and silently steering under the amazing starry glow-worms was the best. Ace, our guide, was funny, an excellent singer and informative.
