Our guide Anita was fifteen minutes early and was eager to fill our heads with the history of Emperor Diocletian‘s Palace.
From the Greeks founding of the city between the 2 & 3 century bc to the Second World War Anita filled in all the timelines..
The Greeks named their settlement Aspálathos after the yellow flowering bush that grows abundantly around and was a trading port then.
Then Rome came Pax Romana for a few centuries then came Emperor Diocletian, a Roman emperor that had been born not far away and never set foot in Rome.
He had the foresight of seeing the past seventeen emperors rise and fall so when his palace was finished (after ten years) he abdicated the throne and lived out the next thirty years in peace.
Christianity came and destroyed his final resting place and turned his mausoleum into a church, one of the oldest in Christendom.
Anita was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the history of everything that we walked through. From the cellars that were featured in Game of Thrones (where the dragons were kept) to the 17 hundred year old Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter that still stands intact with original carvings and a barrel roof.
Wandering down streets that are shiny and worn by countless other footsteps. Some streets so narrow that you could almost stretch out your arms and touch either side.
Homes that have been occupied by the same families for a thousand years.
A restaurant that has been serving coffee since 1776, a bakery making bread for over 800 years.
If you’re interested ask for Anita, take the tour, we came off a cruise ship, it’s a fifteen minute walk from the ship to the Palace.
And I might want to add Anita mentioned that she’s never met anyone from the heartland of America and would love to learn your story as she tells you about her journey through Emperor Diocletian’s Palace.
We would hundred percent recommend this tour and Anita as your guide.
With much gratitude,
Walter & Mary

It was a very last minute decision to take this walking tour and I’m so glad I booked this. Anita was the best guide I could have asked for. Pleasant, kind and very knowledgeable. In addition to sharing the abundant history that Split holds she shared many stories as a local and about the Croatian culture. Highly recommend this tour with Anita:)
