A great day outside the hustle and bustle of the city
Had a wonderful first day in Uganda with Shedrack. He hooked me up with an e bike as the company is soon to introduce these, which was the perfect solution to a muddy ride after the morning rain. He paid attention to my abilities as a rider and was so willing to take pictures for the duration of the tour.

See the real Uganda!
The ride was perfectly orchestrated from start to finish. The organizers made sure I had a bike that fit and was comfortable. The boat ride to the island was short but smooth and beautiful. The ride on the peninsula was spectacular. I felt like I was seeing the real Uganda. The people, especially the kids were so friendly! The ride was not super challenging but just enough to count as good exercise and to really feel like I saw some wonderful sites. Thanks so much!

Mountain Biking on Lake Victoria “island.”
The mountain biking was a great workout! There are lots of large hills to navigate with dirt roads and mud and potholes and protruding rocks! The bikes are 10 speed and solid—I used the gears a lot. I loved seeing the area. It was interesting and eye opening because of how the people live and toil there. Shedrack, the guide, was amazing! He’s so nice, so patient, and speaks excellent English. It was an awesome excursion!!!

Sayurday bike ride
My partner and I had a greatvtime. Our guide was able to find a route that matched our skill set....uphills, single track, gentle downhills...it was absolutely fabulous to see the terrain, vegetation, and culture on the island.
Thank you

Birds, monkey's and bicycles
The short but beautiful boat ride across to the peninsula, the quiet, bird song, butterflies and the monkey's! The cycling was fun, some off the beaten track and into the forest. Thr guide was knowledgeable and clearly loved cycling and nature!

Best cycle experience ever
I loved everything from responsive engagement during the booking process, prompt and courteous pickup at the hotel, to quick and efficient gear collection and boat ride across the lake to an exhilarating ride through the countryside and villages, to the monkeys in trees on the edges of the cycle paths to the most breathtaking strains of worship in song at a local Church. Our guide, Shedrack, was the absolute best: courteous, kind, knowledgeable and patient. He fixed a bike gears that got tangled up with bush, and also dressed a small wound - both competently drawing in a ready toolkit and first aid kit. I would take this tour again if I had the time or am back in the country.

When to visit

Spending time at Lake Victoria is a must for nature lovers and travelers looking to get off the beaten path.
The Ssese Islands are still relatively untouched by tourism; tranquility, however, comes at the cost of a lack of modern amenities.
Don’t forget a jacket for lakeside evenings; the lake is so large it has its own microclimate which results in slightly cooler evenings.
Be aware that storms are common, so it’s worth checking the weather ahead of your voyage.
It’s recommended to avoid swimming, as a lot of raw waste ends up in the waters.
People Also Ask
Why is Lake Victoria in Africa so special?
Lake Victoria is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Africa and the biggest of the African Great Lakes. It spans Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and provides a home to hundreds, if not thousands, of local bird, fish, and mammal species. Plus, Lake Victoria also feeds the Nile River.
When is the best time of year to visit Lake Victoria?
Most visitors plan their trips to Lake Victoria during the dry season, which lasts roughly from December to February and then again from June to August. That’s the ideal window for taking a boat tour, however, if you can brave the rainy season, you’ll catch lush landscapes and migratory birds.
What is a typical Lake Victoria boat tour like?
There are many options for visiting Lake Victoria by boat. One of the most popular is a 2-hour sunset cruise that lets visitors enjoy the lakeside scenery during the golden hour. Other options include half- or full-day experiences—either on motorized boats or traditional canoes—or fishing excursions.
What wildlife can I see at Lake Victoria?
One of the biggest draws in Lake Victoria are its resident hippos. You can also find Nile crocodiles, buffalo, and chimpanzees within Ngamba Island, bordering the massive freshwater lake. The wetlands of Mabamba Bay along the lake’s northern shores are an optimal place to spot some of the area’s 300 bird species.
Can I swim in Africa’s Lake Victoria?
Yes, swimming in Lake Victoria is permitted, but only within designated areas. Venture outside those designated areas at your own risk, as the lake is home to crocodiles. Also, make sure to be careful even within those swimming spots because bad weather can blow in quickly, leading to hazardous conditions.
Do I need my own car to visit Lake Victoria?
No, Lake Victoria is situated near Entebbe, Uganda’s main international airport, making it a convenient destination for travelers to reach even without their own transportation. You’ll find plenty of day trips and multi-day tours available along with airport shuttle services. It’s also possible to visit the lake independently, too.
