It's nicely timed with good directions. I didn't find that there was much material to work with, though

Nice walking tour that provides some history. I like that it isn't too long and helps you get oriented to the Old Wharf area.

If you are off track, it want let you know. We walked for 2 miles and realized we were off track. It just played classical music, which was good, but not informative enough to let us know to turn back. Needless to say we did not finish since we had to get back to the ship. It was leaving.

This was a nice alternative to the guided tours. Allowed you to go at your own pace. Audio was clear and quite informative for the history and buildings of Portland.
Recommend if guided tours are booked up.
Only challenge - you have to download a second APP to start the tour. This was in the directions but just not super clear. Works on both Apple and Android.

Poor experience- NOT USER FRIENDLY unable to connect with tour. At first I didn’t see where to enter the code. After consulting via chat they were unable to help me as to where to enter the code. After chatting with the 3rd person I was told where to enter the code but the code was then expired. When I did the chat they said to call tour manager by then we gave up. :(

Have sturdy shoes as the brick and cobblestone pavements were rough. Make sure that the audio plays back well, as we had to download a second time to correct an audio malfunction. The narration was good. The speech was clear and the pace comfortable. Overall a good experience except for our download glitch, and that could have been on us.

Your phone needs to be on the proper setting for the location to work accurately. Once we figured that out it was great!

The architecture in Portland is amazing! The tour is a bit of a hike, however. We didn’t finish the tour because we got so tired. It was well worth it, though. I never knew that Portland was so vibrant. I would definitely recommend the tour.

Lots of history of churches. It takes you in a loop, often talking about a building from one side then coming back to it and talking more about the same thing from the other side.

This was a fantastic and easy way to see the city and historic sites that I otherwise would not have seen. I actually purchased the year long subscription to use on my other trips!

Nice tour. Just right amount of walking. The speed of the narrator was very close to the walking time
Dan_B, Jun 2025
The really nice thing about the tour is that since it is self-guided you can go at your own pace, going slower or faster as needed. You can also repeat areas if you like. This was our first self-guided walking tour through Viator and I believe that as we use it in the future it will become easier and more second nature.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Portland. The content was fun and informational. We know now for future tours we will take our earbuds to make it easier to walk and listen.
The "in app" map was very helpful, since street signs seem almost non-existent on the first part of the tour. It was also nice to be able to pause the tour to take extra time to explore.

It was a great experience. I enjoyed learning the history of Old Port. The lighthouse was not there, so an updated tour would be nice. Overall, very well organized.

Giving up the audio and walking around on our own. The narrative, although informative, gave poor directions in terms of which way to go and which way to turn. It seems we were always headed in the wrong direction. Instead of enjoying the sights around us, we were trying to keep up with the audio- not a pleasant feeling.
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Sorry you had that feeling. The walking speed is set at a standard pace, but feel free to walk slower :). The tour plays as you walk and is location aware, so it plays as you walk. So your speed is up to you. There is an arrow in the app that points to the next stop if you do go off track and there is also a map to see your location and the tour route. There are verbal directions where to stand, turn, walk, I'm sorry those did not work out for you. Many comment that they are clear. I'd love your feedback, my email is info@walkntours.com. Thank you for touring with WalknTours!

One might question the quality of an audio tour, but I am here to tell you it was an exceptional experience! The guide gave very clear directions of the city and the history behind each point addressed in a way that was easy to follow and absolutely informative and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend you consider this tour next time you’re in the area.

Thank you for the help navigating Portland. We found unique spots and little treasures. I will definitely be using this app again
Judy_S, Sept 2024
I found the directions of where to go excellent. My only negative is I wish it said the distance to next stop in approximate steps, kms, miles, feet, etc. What would be most applicable.
Robin_M, Aug 2024
Our first walking tour. The did such a good job. We look forward to doing more tours like it. Directions were easy to follow and it was interesting
Alexa_G, Aug 2024
A nice way to get to know some of the more popular streets. Arrow function is helpful as well as the ability to pause, rewind, skip ahead, etc.
Peter_R, Jul 2024
Fantastic owner. He was very caring and thoughtful and made sure everyone was happy. Walked to old historic sites. Had a family of six.
Howard_R, Jun 2024
The tour was very well designed, great stops, right amount of detail, nice balance of US, world, civil rights history, commerce, whimsical. Terrific way to spend a morning in Portland!
Holly_G, May 2024
Interesting commentary, it was well done. App can be a little glitch, but stick with it and you'll enjoy.
Julia_M, Mar 2024
It was great to be able to go at our own pace and stop the tour whenever we wanted. I’ve been to Portland many times but I learned so many new things. I would highly recommend this tour service.
Keith_M, Mar 2024
I was not able to open my purchase. It was the biggest pain in the ass. It’s not likely that I will use this app again.

Door 44, Longfellow home,
Statues were our favorites
Directions were great and just the right amount of time
All were places we had not seen before
Would have enjoyed more history and back stories.

This is a great intro to the city if you're pressed for time or can't commit to a guided tour. Informative and convenient. Directions on where to go were very clear.
It did take. a lot of my phone battery to do the tour. Nothing unexpected as I've done other self-guided tours and had this experience. But in case you're without a portable charger/way to recharge your device...
Rebecca_M, Oct 2023
I did these self guided audio tours at every port from my New England cruise. They are the best way to get around town, learn interesting facts and history, all while going at your own pace. Everyone in my group downloaded the app after buying the tour via Viator. DON’T forget your headset/earbuds! You can stop for a lobster roll or whatever you want during any part of the tour. It helps to have the map open while listening. The recording should automatically start as you reach each stop. We had no problems with this app, navigation, and tour. If you’re thinking about doing this, don’t hesitate! We all really enjoyed it!
Cindy_M, Oct 2023
I am giving this an average rating as I just couldn't seem to find anything. Perhaps it was operator error, perhaps programing.
Jacqueline_A, Sept 2023
It was very difficult to follow without a GPS along with the narration. The arrow did help as well as the pictures but we still constantly got lost so stopped the tour after a while.
