Perfect Mix of History & Relaxation!
The One Day Tour to Chacchoben Mayan City and Bacalar Lagoon was an amazing experience. The ruins were fascinating, and our certified guide made the history come alive with great explanations.
Bacalar Lagoon was absolutely stunning—the water colors are unreal and it was the perfect place to relax after exploring the ruins.
Everything was well-organized and ran smoothly. Highly recommend this tour if you want a mix of culture and natural beauty in one day

Worth it!
Fabulous. Tour guide, Elliott, was amazing, personable and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend. The Chaccohben site was worth the trip. The special treat was making tortillas and having lunch with the REAL women of Chacchoben in the small town nearby. My 87 yr old mother went and this was the highlight of the cruise for her.

Maya ruins
It is a bit of a drive there, but the tour guide talked to us about Costa Maya on the way. The ruins were neat, and you could ascend some of the stairs (the base structures, not the upper structures). We even saw a few spider monkeys. Wear walking shoes. The group was small (13 tourists), which made the tour a little flexible and gave plenty of opportunity for questions.

Disabled vet finally seeing the Ruins.
Our guide his name was Juan Carlos and he was so funny and made everything a great experience. He had plenty of water for everyone so we stayed hydrated on a hot day seeing the ruins but explained a lot completely in detail. He even had laminated pictures to show explaining other stuff. He was very informative. The ruins were definitely a slight to see. My husband does have a wheelchair so I would say that if you have a wheelchair. The rough terrain is a little complicated, but we did okay.

Raphael took us on a wonderful tour through the mayan ruins. He provided cold drinks and snacks and was very professional and informative. We also went to a fruit stand where we had the best pineapple and a salsa stand where I picked up a few bottles for myself and others. We loved this excursion from our MSC cruise.

When to visit

Since the ruins are mostly unexcavated, visitors should wear sneakers or hiking boots, not flip-flops.
Mosquitos may be abundant, especially during rainy season, so remember to bring insect repellent.
Keep your eyes open for deer, peccaries (piglike animals), armadillos, gray foxes, and spider and howler monkeys, which inhabit the surrounding jungle.
