The Canoeing Trail operates above the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe on on the Zambezi River. This section of the river is quite unlike the better-known section below Lake Kariba. Here the Zambezi River is regarded as FREE FLOW as a dam does not control it, as such the water is subject to seasonal variation. Floods begin in January and normally peak in April / May. This changes the route as new channels open with the rise in water level. There are numerous islands, which are dissected by channels that may be several kilometres in length and vary in width from one to twenty metres. Rapids are small and at their peak are only classed as grade one, so easily manageable in the canoes we use. The Canoe Trail passes along the banks of the Zambezi National Park, where clients have a good chance of viewing various species of animals, such as Elephants, Buffalo, Impala, Kudu, Hippo, Crocodile etc. The birdlife is prolific with at least 50 common species of bird that can be seen from your canoe.

What truly sets this canoeing safari apart is the way it brings you into the heart of Africa’s wilderness not just to watch it, but to live it from the water itself. Unlike typical wildlife tours where animals are viewed from a vehicle or boat, this experience places you at river-level in a canoe, gliding silently through the Upper Zambezi’s channels above Victoria Falls. This peaceful mode of travel lets you encounter elephants drinking at the water’s edge, hippos surfacing nearby, crocodiles basking on banks, and an incredible array of birdlife all with a sense of intimacy and immersion that larger boats or safari jeeps simply can’t match. Many travelers describe the experience as a “once-in-a-lifetime journey,” noting how the slow, quiet pace lets them absorb the rhythms of nature, watch wildlife in peaceful coexistence, and enjoy meals riverside moments often described as highlights of their entire Victoria Falls trip. It’s a genuine African safari experience via canoe.
