3 Days in Cork for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who can't get enough of Ireland.

I first stayed in Cork to visit Blarney Castle. A few years later, when I had time to stay longer, I discovered what a gem Ireland's second-largest city is. I can easily spend many hours walking through the stalls at the English Market, tasting along the way. Cork is best explored on foot so you can pop into little shops and pubs.

When you have three days in Cork, you'll be able to see much of the city center and venture out to the seaside town of Kinsale if you wish to enjoy a slower pace. Here's the scoop on how you can maximize your time in Cork.

Bring rain gear—Cork has moderate temperatures with frequent rainstorms.

If you only have time for one thing, visit Blackrock Castle Observatory.

Day 1

When you visit the second-largest city in Ireland, you'll want to walk the streets. Near the city center, you can reach spots like Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral and Elizabeth Fort. Walk along the River Lee through Marina Park and go to the charming Blackrock Castle Observatory, a castle now used as a science center.

You can bet that a city with a Butter Museum has a vibrant culinary scene. Walk through the English Market to see what the vendors offer. The market has plenty of spots for a bite, or if you prefer a sit-down meal, head to a nearby restaurant.

Day 3

Spend the morning exploring the seaside town of Kinsale, a 30-minute drive from Cork. Visit Desmond Castle (now home to the International Museum of Wine) and the star-shaped Charles Fort, one of Ireland's largest military installations. Kinsale is known for its food scene, so eat at least one meal there.

Head back to Cork for your last stop, the Cork City Gaol. This former prison may look like a castle, but it was used to house prisoners in the 19th century. Full of history, the prison can be visited independently (audio guides are available) or as part of a guided tour.
