Not only do you have the best chance of seeing a Sri Lankan leopard, but you also have a very high chance of seeing elephants. We went during a period of time that Yala national park was experiencing a mini-drought. This meant that the elephants were further inside the park around the permanent lakes and not need the main roads. Even then, we still managed to spot a lone male grazing in amongst the trees. If you go to Yala when there are not experiencing a drought then you will certainly see herds of elephants roaming around the park in plain sight.

Bundala National Park is located approximately 15 Kilometers from Tissamaharama, the nearest resort town. In 2005 the park was designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, also designated a RAMSAR wetland its home to many migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. The most famous visitor being the greater flamingo's which arrives in large flocks up to a thousand birds at a time is, making a cacophony of noise with their feeding and covering the entire area of the main Bundala lagoon with a pinkish threadbare carpet, truly a sight to behold. The park contains 05 brackish water lagoons, Bundala being the best known and the best place to creep to watch elephants frolicking at dusk is the nearby tank called "Kokara", advice caution as the elephants found at Bundala is a little more aggressive due to human-elephant conflict in the area. Great trip to Yala!

This was a great trip that we’d definitely recommend if you’re staying near Galle. We managed to see leopards, elephants, lots of bird varieties, monkeys, deer, buffalo, crocodiles, and lizards, just to name a few. We didn’t think we’d be able to see so much in a day trip, so it was definitely worth it!

FABULOUS Afternoon. Saw a majestic LEOPARD

FANTASTIC Experience - Terrific driver. He was extremely alert and very enthusiastic ... eagerly followed the clues and we went back and forth looking for the prized animals. As a result of his determination - and of course a little luck - we did see a full grown male leopard. Also saw an elephant mother with two young ones. And crocs, spotted deer, many birds, many monkeys, monitor lizards... Was a very satisfying trip. One point to be noted though ... somehow, the operator had omitted to send the driver to my hotel by 2.30pm. Knowing the chain - Viator to operator to driver, I knew there might be a slip-up so I'd called up the operator at 1.18pm to confirm. They did confirm and confirmed that someone will pick me up between 2.15pm and 2.30 pm. When no one appeared by 2.45 pm I called again. They apologised and offered to book me for the NEXT day and said it was a technical glitch so they did get the booking. (Clearly this was incorrect as we had spoken) This was upsetting as the only reason to be in Yala for a day was the safari and I could not stay back the next day. However they DID manage to cool me down by saying they will send someone right away and that it was not too late to start. So my final conclusion is that mistakes happen, but the operator did what was necessary to correct the mistake and took urgent steps to make it all work out. I'd recommend a pre-call with booking number and hotel confirmation so that any disappointment is avoided. Am grateful that all went well in the end as it was a fabulous trip.

Wonderful day in Yala with Bale

We had an amazing full day safari with Bale. I am 100% convinced he was the best driver in the park on the day, he seemed to know exactly where to go and when to go there to get the best experience! Sometimes it felt like we were the only people in the whole park. We got to see loads of water buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, mongoose, deer, monitor lizards and even a leopard! The full day tour was really worth it, because once the half day tour jeeps leave, the number of other jeeps in the park really falls dramatically, and it gets much quieter. Bale was so kind, and also very knowledgeable about the park and the animals, and able to answer all of our questions. The lunch included also deserves a mention, an excellent traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry. What an amazing day, I would 100% recommend this experience.
